Planning Retirement Online

LaterLife Challenge Regional Winner: Chris Tormey

Our regional winner for the South West of England was Chris Tormey. Our judges felt Chris was a worthy winner because of the range of his activities and the fact they benefit both himself and also others. These covered mental, physical, practical social areas; Chris really is covering it all!

The judges were extremely impressed by his obvious enthusiasm for all aspects of his busy life and his willingness to use his skills for the benefit of others. In the past, he has helped people to lead a healthy lifestyle and he now uses his expertise to run a magazine for local people that they can access anywhere in the world. As a parish councillor he works to improve the locality for people and he still finds time to play bowls and to socialise with his friends.

Chris contributes to Which? Surveys, for the benefit of others and his interest in model railways leads him to get very involved with two model railway societies and he is also a member of various organisations that help protect our environment.

So Chris’s breadth of interests and his interest in helping others make him a very worthy recipient of a regional award in this year’s Laterlife Challenge.

His actual entry included…

"Since retiring I have become an Editor, one of four, of a local magazine and grown the circulation to 1020. Thechimes.org.uk is our new website to enable people to see the content anywhere in the world. I support this now after an initial design input from a professional. My other interests include being a member of the Model Electronic Railway Group (MERG) and N Gauge Society, (at present building a demonstration track design for an electronic control system designed by MERG), a member of The National Trust, Herefordshire Wildlife Trus and Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

I am a local Parish Councillor (Vice-Chairman) actively championing the move to be a Quality Council and to provide a Quality Plan and Neighbourhood Plan over the next two years for Aston Ingham. I play Short Mat Bowls once a week and enjoy the company of friends when eating out once a week. At the moment I am helping my wife with planting out in the garden for sweet peas etc. and renovating the garden seats for the summer. I am a member of Which? and contribute to their surveys. I am taking part in a Distance Learning Course in Dog Grooming so that I may do better at looking after our Border Collie, Pippa."

So well done indeed Chris. Look out for more stories from the Laterlife Challenge soon. And if you are doing something interesting in retirement, let us know. Sharing experiences can help and give inspiration to many of us who find the transition into retirement challenging.

Also a big congratulations go of course to our overall Challenge winner Annie Makepeace, who you can read more about here.
