Now is the time to sign up for Christmas

For some time now at Laterlife we have been thinking of including a new section on volunteering and charities. As our full time work reduces, it is wonderful to be able to give back to society in various ways. Also, volunteering and becoming involved in charitable work is a terrific way to make new friends and have lots of fun as well.

So keep an eye out as we develop this section in the coming months.

But in the meantime TimeBank has launched an appeal for people to help out this Christmas.

If you haven’t heard of TimeBank, it is a national volunteering charity, started in 2000. It recruits and trains volunteers to deliver mentoring projects to tackle complex social problems and also works with businesses to engage their staff in volunteering. It is funded by a range of trusts and foundations and is an excellent source of information for anyone who would like to get involved in any of their projects.

Volunteer to be the gift this Christmas!

TimeBank says many charities are desperate for people to lend a helping hand over Christmas. But they do need to plan ahead, so if you are thinking of volunteering this year, now’s the time to find out what’s available in your area.

The organization has just launched a special guide on its website in response to all the calls it receives about volunteering opportunities each Christmas.

You could pack a shoe box full of gifts for children across the world; host an international student at your home, help out at a foodbank for hungry families or volunteer as a residential helper at respite care centres across the UK.

You might have thought about helping to serve Christmas lunch at a homeless shelter but did you know that many shelters also need entertainers, medical professionals, hairdressers, therapists and dog handlers?
