Surprising courses from the Field Studies Council

February 2013

A friend recently came back from a painting course and was telling me all about the Field Studies Council. I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it as they do such amazing things and, even better, run terrific courses in a range of really interesting areas.

Today it has 17 centres right across the UK and provides enjoyable opportunities for people of all ages to discover, to explore and generally to appreciate many aspects of our wonderful natural environment.

The main area that interested me was the courses they hold throughout the year. These cover the widest range of subjects, from art and painting to photography and traditional skills and from history and archaeology to a range of wildlife activities.

The crafts and traditional skills include stone walling, fly fishing, archery and even willow and woodwork and keeping chickens.

And so it goes on, the breadth of courses is really wide but everyone has a basic environmental theme.

Some of the courses are day courses and others cover several days and include accommodation and food. They are mainly held at the FSC Centres and these have all been chosen for their very special locations. Each centre has its own unique character and many are historic buildings that have been adapted for modern use.

The courses include up to 8 hours teaching time a day, full board and accommodation including cooked breakfasts, picnic lunches and home made cakes plus an evening meal, and the use of resources throughout the day.

Older people and those with disabilities are very well catered for.

If you want to learn something completely new or develop an interest you already had, it really is worth looking at what the FSC offers.
