Planning Retirement Online

The answer to life, the universe and everything in later life?

By Tony Clack and Dave Sinclair,
retired founders of LaterLife

October 2017

This month sees the launch of Probably42, a new idea that we hope will be of particular interest to those of us who are retired.

If you’ve ever been on one of the LaterLife Retirement Courses you’ll know that we talk about the 5 essentials of retirement: staying physically fit; staying mentally fit; maintaining or increasing your social network; staying financially fit i.e. living within your means; and enjoying it!

We also hear from many retirees that they would like to continue to use their knowledge, skills and experience (KSE) in some way in retirement.

Probably42 provides an outlet for that KSE and ticks three of those boxes: staying mentally fit; maintaining or increasing your social network; and enjoying it. It’s also a different way of giving something back.

So what is Probably42?

It’s an experiment in Knowledge Networking and using the latent talent of retired people, and others, to develop well-balanced ideas on any topic; in particular related to improving the way society operates for our children and grandchildren.

It has two strands of activity to it; a face-to-face element through relaxed and enjoyable ‘Pie and Pint’ discussions in a sociable environment, and an online element through the probably42.net website.

We have set up our own regular ‘Pie and Pint’ meetings in a country pub with 3 other friends and have developed a way to turn an enjoyable chat in the pub into something of real value, capturing the output on the Probably42 website.

The website offers ways of then commenting on and helping develop one another’s ideas, or of inputting completely new ones. In fact, although we think the social aspect of face-to-face meetings will appeal to retirees, anyone of any age can participate, face-to-face or purely online.

We’d like to invite you, as a LaterLife reader, to come and take a look and participate. You’ll already find ideas on diverse topics such as solving the housing crisis for our children and grandchildren; artificial intelligence and how we might handle its impact; addressing the issues of the costs of elderly social care.

We’ve developed a kit to guide you should you want to set up your own Pie and Pint meeting, Pastry and Prosecco meeting or whatever you might like to call it. You can obtain this guide on the website. It’s free to become a member and to use the website and you can unsubscribe at any time should you want to. You can comment online on existing ideas, simply support them, help develop others, or input your own ideas.

So we hope you’ll come and register as a member and see what it’s all about, just visit probably42.net and use the sign-up box on the front page. We are both members of Probably42 so we’d welcome you conversing with us or giving us your feedback.

Probably42 is the first initiative of ‘The Knowledge, Skills and Experience Foundation’ which is a non-profit making Social Enterprise organisation that Tony and Dave have set up.
