Blackberries - SuperfruitThe gorgeous goodness of blackberries.

One good thing about summer drawing to a close is blackberries. What a wonderful annual activity that is, delicately picking off those plump little blackberries from the prickly hedgerows and tasting their sweetness either fresh, or in a range of great recipes and jams.

Even better, blackberries are so good for you that they are often included in the range of foods known as “super fruits” .

First, they contain really high levels of antioxidant phytonutrients such as vitamin C, E and K. This means they can help fight free radical damage in the body, a really important aspect in keeping healthy.

The high levels of antioxidants in blackberries help protect eyesight, decrease inflammation, can help strengthen blood vessels and give protection against chronic illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.

The seeds in blackberries, which are contained in the fruit, are also said to be rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These are known to assist in helping cardiovascular health by reducing harmful cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Blackberries are also very good sources of soluble fibre which is really beneficial for the digestive tract.

More recently, there have been claims that blackberries are rich in plant-based estrogens (phytoestrogens) which can help prevent the development of cervical and breast cancers.

Really, with their goodness and fabulous flavour, it is just a real shame they don’t grow wild in the UK all year round.
