Don’t be a lemon about lemons!

Lemons are a much maligned fruit. While they add enormously to drinks and certain dishes, they are not generally considered as good as natural orange or even grapefruit juice to drink.

Because of the sour taste, many people think they must be really acid and so therefore not a good thing to drink neat.

This is actually wrong - lemons are bursting with all sorts of good things and while they do contain citric acid and seem very acidic, in your stomach they become an alkali. This is good and helps to balance your body’s pH.

Starting your day with lemon juice in hot water is far better than a cup of tea; it freshens you up, stimulates your digestive track and adds vitamin C as well.

Lemon juice mixed with flaxseeds is often used as an aid in constipation and is believed to help eliminate waste more quickly.

Drinking lemon juice every day can raise the citrate levels in urine which may assist in preventing kidney stones.

It is not only the yellow colour that is similar to bananas; lemons also share with bananas the benefit of being rich in potassium; this mineral is essential in helping you stay strong and agile.

It is also thought that compounds in lemons can help to protect you against certain types of cancer. Lemons contain limonoids, an organic substance that not only helps determine their bitterness but also can inhibit the growth of tumours.

All in all, lemons offer a lot to a regular diet and these deserve a lot more than just being used in pancakes, cheesecakes and gin and tonics!
