Knowhow No. 17

Everyone has different reasons when buying an MP3 player; for use at the gym, while doing housework or even listening to music on the way to work. The one thing you have in common - you want the MP3 player to be perfect for your needs.

Our guide below will tell you everything you need to know about choosing your MP3 player.

What to look for when buying an MP3 player

The Knowhow

Before you go shopping for an MP3 player, you need to consider down the following questions:

What is my budget?

  • Nowadays, you don't have to spend all your precious pennies on a new MP3 player - the price can start as low as £10, depending on what features you need.
  • Set a maximum price you want to pay and move forward from there.

What am I going to be using my MP3 player for?

MP3 players don't have to be just for listening to music on - with technology zooming past us, you can now watch videos on them, or store photos and data files.

If using your MP3 player at the gym you might want:

  • Long battery life
  • A smaller size; preferably something you can clip on
  • Shockproof - something that isn't going to cut out while jogging

If using your MP3 player for data storage as well, you might want:

  • Lots of storage space
  • Easy to move files from your MP3 player to a computer

How many songs do I want to store on it?

The general public use their MP3 player to listen to .MP3 files. The size of the MP3 file depends on; sound quality and song length.

Below is a guide to approximately the lowest amount of songs that can fit on each sized MP3 player; with a file size being, on average 5mb.

MP3 Songs (Approx) 410 820 1,640 3,277 6,554 13,108
MP3 Player Size 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB 32GB 64GB

If you're going to use your MP3 player for watching videos, you should be looking at purchasing one that's 8GB or higher.

What extra features would I like?

  • Check the MP3 player plays the file format you will be using. Examples are, .WAV, .WMA and .AAC.
  • You might want a snazzy LCD screen that you can watch video files on
  • Ease of use; you don't want to be fiddling around not knowing how to put your music onto the MP3 player.
  • You might want one that can play AM/FM radio
  • Can you connect the MP3 player to your devices, or are there things like speakers available for it?  While the iPod probably has the most compatability, other MP3 players often have their own special extras

Now you're clued up, it's time to start enjoying your music on the go.
