Knowhow No. 20

If you’ve got an iPod, iPad or iPhone you really need an iTunes account to get the best out of it. Once created, the account lets you buy an enormous variety of Apps, music, videos and even books that turn your device into an amazing mobile media unit. Journeys fly by as you listen to your favourite podcast or while away an hour playing the latest puzzle game. You can get productive and cut together that movie you’ve been working on or digitally edit some of your photos. Whether it’s for work or play, the iTunes store has many delights to tempt you with.

It’s an exclusive club, though, and you’ll need to give a few details to be able to enter. Here’s how to do it.

Creating an iTunes account on your computer

What you'll need

The Knowhow

You will need a credit card or PayPal account to create your iTunes account.

  • If you don’t already have it, download iTunes from Apple’s website: Apple iTunes Download
  • Open iTunes and click on the Store menu
  • From the dropdown menu, select Create Account
  • Follow the onscreen instructions and read the terms and conditions. Tick the box that says you agree to them, then click Continue
  • Complete the form to create your user ID, and change any selected options you don’t want. Click Continue
  • Fill in your payment details and billing address. It’s free to sign up to iTunes, but the payment details will be used if you ever make a purchase. There are many free items on the iTunes Store as well as paid ones.
  • Click Continue and check your email for a confirmation message from Apple
  • When the email arrives, follow the instructions in it to verify your address
  • You will be taken to a new webpage to complete the verification. Enter your email address and password to complete creating your account.

You can now access the iTunes store to purchase and download any items you want. This account can be used on apple devices such as the iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone. From books to Beethoven, it’s all available for you to browse and download. Happy shopping!

Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific details.
