Knowhow No. 23

laptop

Just like a car, your computer needs a regular service to keep it running smoothly. Most of us will have experienced an issue of some kind with our technology, and it really pays to regularly maintain your PC, rather than to wait until a problem arises and then try to fix it retrospectively.

What is a computer healthcheck and do I need one for my PC, laptop or tablet computer?

The Knowhow

What is a computer healthcheck?

A computer healthcheck is essentially like an MOT for your PC.

Healthchecks are a great way to make sure that your computer stays healthy; they identify potential threats and prevent damage from escalating in the event that there is a problem

A typical healthcheck scans the computer for:

  • Corrupted (damaged) files and folders
  • Out-of-date software
  • Checks the state of your hard drive
  • Identifies and removes scary viruses and any lurking spyware (software which burrows its way into your PC and tracks your movements, passwords and internet usage)
  • Unwanted or unused build-up of software

Most healthchecks also include:

  • An intensive clean - A build-up of dust and debris on the surface of your PC can make your computer overheat and crash repeatedly; a healthcheck will usually include a clean-up of hard-to-reach places such as beneath the keys on the keyboard and in the fan ventilation system
  • Back-up creation. The member of staff conducting the healthcheck will create recovery disks for all of your important data, so that you have a safety net in the event of a hard-drive failure
  • Optimisation - one of the best ways to optimise your PC's performance is by investing in a healthcheck operation. This way, a professional technician can identify how best to orient your PC to fit in with your requirements, making it faster, easier to navigate, easier to use, and generally tiered to your personal preferences.

When do I need to arrange a computer healthcheck?

  • Like an MOT, a PC healthcheck should ideally be arrange once every year; this ensures that your technology is working to the very best of its ability
  • If your PC begins to show signs of wear-and-tear (slowing down, crashing, refusing to answer commands which have been executed, delays between an executed command and performance of the task etc. etc.), take it straight for a healthcheck to minimise damage

Is my computer ready for a Healthcheck?

To use our Healthcheck service, your computer should meet a few requirements:

  • Your PC needs Windows 7 or Vista to work with the Healthcheck software
  • Your machine must be able to stay on without crashing for a minimum of two hours. This is how long the initial Healthcheck takes, on average. If your computer is unable to stay on for this long there may be a more serious issue that needs investigating
  • Does your computer have a CD / DVD drive or a working USB port? We will need these to install and run the healthcheck software

Please note: You will need to bring your computer's charger or power cable when bringing it in for a healthcheck.
