Knowhow No. 2

Camcorders have increased in popularity as they have shrunk in size, become simpler to use as well as more affordable. They are popular for family videos and are also great for recording grand children's antics that can be used to tease them as they grow older.

But what matters when looking to buy one? Well Knowhow have come up with a short checklist to ensure you get a camcorder most suitable for you.

What to look for when buying a camcorder

We cherish sitting around with friends and family, looking back at old memories. The slight problem is none of you can quite make out what everyone on the recording is saying and suddenly you hear an "Oh no" and the camera cuts out.

You don't want to miss out on snapping the next memory because of a low battery or bad sound quality, so we'll show you what to look out for when buying your new camcorder.

A lot of devices nowadays provide a source of video recording; whether it's on your mobile phone or your digital camera, but what's the difference?

  • Camcorders have a lens which helps respond quicker to moving images
  • A camcorder gives the extra details; closer zooming while you're videoing, a rotating LCD screen and longer battery life.
  • Ever been to a fantastic concert, taken a video with your camera and after playing it back all you can hear is crackling? Camcorders are designed to provide good quality sound; digital cameras are only meant for taking short videos in a quieter and smaller area.

Know what you would like

Make a list of what you'll be using it for and how much you would like to spend.

  • Battery: You want the battery to last you a good day of on-off recording. Also, check to see how you charge the battery after use.
  • Weight: There's a lot of different options, so see how comfortable you are with holding the camcorder you like
  • Memory: Find out how much internal and external memory it has. It's no good taking longer length videos if you can't save them after. Also, see what the camcorders memory card compatibility is; you need to be able to transfer your videos/pictures as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • Zoom: Celebrity spotting and don't want to look obvious when taking a snap? Some camcorders can zoom in from several feet away, without the picture/video becoming blurry.
  • Screen: It's good to have the option to look back at your videos. You also might want to look for a rotatable screen, allowing you to take your videos at any angle.

Check to see if cables and instructions are provided to plug it into your TV.
Once you've found a camcorder, look at user reviews before purchasing; they're often very helpful

Lights, camera, action!
