Making an event of summer 2012

June 2012

Sally with torch What a year for Britain! The Diamond Jubilee is exceptional, 60 years with the same Queen. Many of us I am sure an just about remember hearing of the death of King George VI and the wonderful Coronation the following year, with its faltering black and white television coverage on tiny box like tv sets.

The River Pageant on Sunday June 3rd this year will be one of the true highlights. Like many I am unable to be in London to watch it first hand, but I am sure we can see at least the highlights on various tv programmes and there is so much happening all over the country that no one needs to feel left out. Street parties, beacon lightings, fetes, festivals - every community seems to be getting into the spirit of the Diamond Jubilee.

And no sooner is that over than we are ready for the build up to the Olympics. My mother attended the Olympics when they were last in London in 1948 - she rode up on a bicycle, propped it against a railing at Wembley and wandered in to watch some events. How times have changed!!

Sally with torchI was lucky enough to be a torch bearer this year and that was very special indeed. I have been a little cynical about the Olympic Games coming to London because of the massive expenditure involved. But carrying the torch among so many wonderful people made me think again. Meeting other runners who have done so much for their local communities and running in front of the crowds lining the pavement who had all turned out at an early hour to show their support for the Games and for the UK, it all made me enormously proud of many aspects of Britain.

It is so easy to dwell on all the problems, but when you start looking at all the good things instead, Britain is still an amazing place to live. Perhaps, for the next two months, everyone should simply dwell on all the fabulous things that are happening on our little island.

If you have any stories connected with the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games, do send them in. There is so much interest and it would be so good to share them with other Laterlife viewers. Just email me at
