LOOKING GOOD IN
LATERLIFE

Beauty inside out,
outside in
by Sarah Frankel
A combination of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals -
cosmeceuticals - contain ingredients that are said to improve
the skin’s appearance by delivering nutrients necessary for
healthy skin.
Dr Nicholas Perricone, a research dermatologist based in
the United States, is regarded as the Father of the Inflammation
Theory of Ageing. His quest was to find ways to stop, prevent
and reverse the negative effects of inflammation. These effects
are invisible to the naked eye.
The author of four New York Times best-sellers, Dr
Perricone’s latest book was launched in the UK in March.
Seven Secrets to Beauty, Health and Longevity
reveals the seven secrets of age-proofing from the inside out,
by stimulating cellular rejuvenation, a process that revives
cells and helps us grow new ones.
With some chapters titled “Stay young with a robust sex life”,
“Control mental and physical stress” and “Rejuvenate your facial
structure – not just your skin”, his book is an interesting and
informative read.
According to Dr Perricone’s inflammation theory, and
inside-out beauty, some foods are pro inflammatory, some anti
inflammatory. High blood sugar, says Dr Perricone, causes
irreversible damage and accelerates ageing. Insomnia, stress and
computer screens are pro inflammatory.
The blood sugar
level is the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood (also known
as serum glucose level).
Dr Perricone
recommends eating fruit, fish and vegetables, as well as
taking a vitamin C supplement to reverse sun damage and heal
scars. His three-day diet is protein rich, controls seratonin,
burns fat and provides omega 3 and antioxidants. The diet
improves the skin, the seratonin improves your mood and as a
consequence, inflammation drops.
To look glam as you lose weight, eat the follow twice daily
for three days:
-
Salmon (wild salmon is better than farmed salmon which are
given antibiotics and chemicals during harvesting). If you
don’t eat fish, replace with skinned chicken or tofu.
-
Green salad with olive oil and lemon juice (not vinegar)
-
Berries (bright coloured foods are anti inflammatory)
Other beauty hints
from Dr Perricone are:
-
Coenzyme Q10 maintains high energy levels. Particularly if
you are on statins, take a supplement because statins drain
the body of Co Q10.
-
Take DMAE (dimethylaethanolamine) orally and topically as it
increases tone and lifts (contracts) muscles. It is also
said to increase vigilance, alertness, with a positive
influence on mood.
-
Long-term use of Botox results in muscle mass loss.
-
Do not exercise for more than 45 minutes at a time:
moderation is the key.
-
Your skin is a reflection of what’s going on internally.
-
Maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle.
-
Vanity is important because it means you take care of
yourself.
-
Take fish oil capsules, particularly if you have high
cholesterol or if you are on statins.
-
Drink 8 glasses of pure water a day, as well as other
liquids.
-
Because vitamin C is reduced by sunlight, you need just as
much in the summer as in the winter.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
is a natural substance found in our cells and a powerful
antioxidant. All the products in this line are with DMAE and
include cleanser, toner, firming activator, evening emollient
with retinol, lip plumper, eye therapy, body toning lotion with
SPF 15, and face moisturiser. There are also three specialised
Alpha Lipoic Acid products for the treatment of spider veins.
Vitamin C enhances the skin’s healthy glow, reducing the
appearance of fine lines. Vitamin C Ester is fat soluble and
therapies, all with DMAE, include a facial wash, a restorative
cream and an eye area therapy. My interest peaked at the Vitamin
C Ester Amine Complex Face Lift with DMAE. It improves tone,
radiance, moisturises, nourishes and has antioxidant benefits.
Better than the knife!
Phosphatidyl-E is derived from natural soy products and
aids moisturisation. Containing DMAE, this product line includes
Face Lipid Replenishment and Hand & Body Lipid Replenishment.
The two Olive Oil Treatments, also with DMNA, are a
gentle cleanser and a day treatment, best suited for dry skin.
The men’s line includes shaving cream, after shave and a total
facial repair. They firm and vitalise the skin, while decreasing
the appearance of pore size and fine lines.
Outside-In beauty products, patented by N.V. Perricone MD Ltd
were launched in 1998 and are now available in the UK at major
department stores. Lines include Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C
treatments, Phosphatodyle-E treatments, Olive Oil treatments and
Men’s Skin Treatments.
N.V. Perricone M.D. products are available at department
stores, beauty specialist stores or can be ordered online at
www.nvpmd.co.uk or by
mail order, telephone 0800 783 2583.
