Nutri Centre’s Q & A section

Suppliers of complementary medicine, Nutri Centre (now offering their range of products in a number of larger Tesco stores), are providing laterlife visitors with the opportunity to ask questions on health issues.

The Q & As are produced by Jo Rawlinson in conjunction with the Nutri Centre. Jo is a trained complementary health practitioner who regularly works with and writes on behalf of the Nutri Centre.

I’ve just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I’d like advice please on how to manage my condition and deal with the pain without resorting to pharmaceutical drugs to numb the symptoms.

A: I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis but take heart, as there are a number of things you can do to help alleviate what can often be a debilitating and distressing condition.

Regular, gentle exercise (walking, swimming, yoga) will keep your joint-supporting muscles and ligaments strong. Make sure you reward any heavy activity with well-deserved rest to avoid repetitive ‘wear and tear’ stress. Watch your weight as the heavier you are, the more stressed your joints will be. Eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, nuts and seeds and at least two oily fish portions weekly to ensure you’re getting antioxidant nutrients to reduce inflammation and protect against cell damage. Omega 3 can help prevent and manage arthritis.

On the supplement front, one very highly rated product is Litozin?, originating from Denmark, which takes a different – and more effective – approach than the standard glucosamine. It’s formulated with active ingredient, GOPO, an active compound derived from a type of rosehip. Studies have shown that GOPO’s anti-inflammatory properties are more effective at pain reduction and mobility improvement than other supplements such as glucosamine - 82% of patients reported a reduction in trials after three weeks’ active treatment with GOPO *. Its use can decrease the need for painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs by as much as 40-50%.

Litozin is available in both capsule and powder forms.

Q: Is there a supplement that can help me to feel more energized and well generally? My doctor did not seem to take it very seriously, yet I feel so exhausted all the time, my quality of life has deteriorated considerably in the last 18 months. I do suffer from stress – is it related?

A: Stress definitely has a negative impact on the body and can make you more vulnerable to illness and fatigue, because it depletes the immune system. In fact, a very large percentage (70-80%) of ageing disease is thought to be created out of stress.

There is a wonderful herb, Rhodiola Rosea. It has been hailed as the 21st century’s anti-ageing panacea. Rhodiola is an adaptogenic with anti-stress activity. The main effects of adaptogens are increased availability of energy during the day, a reduction of stressed feelings, increased endurance, greater mental alertness and deeper and more restful sleep. They also significantly accelerate recovery after illness.

Rhodiola, which originates from Russia, has been traditionally given to cosmonauts, soldiers, sportsmen including Olympic athletes, and ageing political leaders as an effective anti-aging medicine – with much success.
