Q & A section

Suppliers of complementary medicine,
Nutri Centre (now offering their range of products in a number
of larger Tesco stores), are providing laterlife visitors with
the opportunity to ask questions on health issues.
The Q & As are produced by Senior Nutritionist Alex Shalet

Prostate Problems
Q. My 63 year old husband is suffering from discomfort and
problems with urinating but is unwilling to see anyone as the
problem is embarrassing. Is there a natural remedy that you can
suggest?
A. The prostate gland lies just below the male’s bladder and
often becomes enlarged in later life; half of all 60 year olds
and 4 out of 5 men in their 80s have some evidence of what is
known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP). The fact that the
prostate gland is wrapped round the urinary passage causes the
symptoms of BHP. These include discomfort when urinating, a weak
urinary stream which may stop and start, passing water more than
normal, not being able to fully empty the bladder and dribbling
of urine or even incontinence. In severe cases acute urinary
retention AUR can occur which can be a medical emergency.
Prostate cancer which affects 10-30% of men over 50, is often
almost symptomless because tumours develop on the outside of the
prostate gland and do not interfere with urinary flow, but to be
on the safe side get your husband to have a check up with the
doctor.
For a healthy prostate follow a diet low in saturated fats and
eat plenty of antioxidant rich fruit and vegetables for adequate
Vitamin C and E intake. Japanese style foods such as soy
products which contain plant hormones my help as they seem to
discourage prostate enlargement. Adequate fibre intake should
help bind hormones in the gut that have been flushed out through
the bile, reducing their re-absorption and potential to trigger
enlargement.
Zinc is important for prostate health as it controls sensitivity
to hormones. So encourage zinc rich foods like lean red meat,
seafood, wholegrains, pulses, eggs and moderate amounts of
cheese in your husbands diet A good supplement is Biocare Opti-Zinc
which provides Zinc as Zinc Methionine which is highly
absorbable..
Tomato based foods contain lycopene and other carotenoids that
seem to protect against prostate cancer. Nuts and seeds and
essential fatty acid supplement such as Flaxseed and Evening
Primrose oil are needed to make prostaglandins – the hormone
like substances necessary for prostate health. VegEPA is a high
potency blend of ultra-pure Omega 3 EPA and cold-pressed evening
primrose oil containing Omega 6 gamma linolenic acid.
A natural remedy, based on Native American Indian herbal wisdom
called Lakota Men’s Formula is designed to support prostate
health. Ingredients include Beta Sitosterol, Saw Palmetto,
Pumpkin seed, Nettle leaf, Couch grass and Quercitin which
together may help with improving urinary flow and frequency and
reducing the discomfort that is often associated with prostate
enlargement.
General Health Boost - People with Difficulty Taking Tablets
Q. I have been a bit under the weather recently and lost my
appetite. I have been told that I need to boost my immune system
and I certainly need more energy but I have always had
difficulty swallowing tablets. The thought of popping lots of
pills is making me really anxious - can you help me?
A. If you have a poor appetite your intake of important minerals
and vitamins can drop.
A convenient alternative to supplements in tablet form is liquid
vitamin and mineral supplements and super foods that can be
drunk or sprinkled on food or yoghurt to eat with a meal.
Apicol Total is designed to increase the body’s natural
resistance, enhance the immune system, boost energy levels and
vitality and feed the digestive system. Ingredients such as
Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen and Propolis have exceptional healing
powers. They are combined in this complete food which has a
delicious honey base and strawberry juice adds to the pleasant
taste. It comes in Individual one a day 1000mg vials so no
tablets to take and excellent support for your system.
As specific problems with swallowing can arise from neurological
disorders, Parkinson's disease or head injuries and stroke it
may be worth having a word with your doctor if you are worried
about any of these.
