Taking your medicine

October 2011

pill boxesEvery year new and improved treatments are being devised for so many illnesses and problems. People are living longer and longer and much of this is due to the development of treatments for specific conditions coupled with the fact that we are paying more attention to ensuring we have healthy lifestyles.

As we get older, many of us start taking various medications and other health boosting supplements such as vitamin tablets to help us keep our health.

However, it can be difficult to remember to take pills every day and some people also have difficulty swallowing some of the larger tablets that are prescribed.

Now there is a growing market to help everyone who has to take a tablet or medication on a regular basis.

New style tablet dispensers are big sellers today as they do make taking medicine and vitamin pills easy. There are a number of different designs available but most contain easy to open compartments for each day of the week and you can also obtain boxes which are separated into timed daytime compartments such as for breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime to that you know exactly what you have taken when.

Pill boxes are now also available for people who have vision problems, so they can easily check whether they have taken that day’s medication and there are special travel versions to take a number of tablets all clearly divided into dates and times for longer periods.

There are even so called “discreet” boxes which can be opened in public without drawing attention to the fact that you have to take regular medication.

And this is just the beginning. Today you can also buy audio pill boxes that not only store your regular medication but will also alert you with a special alarm every time you need to take your tablets. If you are beginning to suffer from hearing problems, then there are vibrating boxes available instead. No excuses there for forgetting your medication!

Design plays a part of course and pill boxes today come in the widest range of colours and styles; you can even get super secure boxes for those of us who are surrounded by little grandchildren with inquisitive fingers!

If you don’t fancy a formal pill box, why not carry your tablets around with you in a charming locket necklace or concealed in a beautifully designed keyring all cleverly made to hold a quantity of tablets in a secure, dry environment. Upmarket leather and embossed silver pill cases, belt clips and fun soft squeezy pill containers are just some of the new designs coming out to help people taking regular medication.

Even better, for people who have problems swallowing their medicine, a range of pill crushers and cutters are available that are quick and easy to operate. Usually you simply pop the pill in one end, twist a section which cuts the pill into halves or quarters, and then remove it from the bottom segment; but there are many different versions. Some are included in a drinking cup so that the tablet can be crushed and mixed with liquid to make it much easier to take.

Finally, for those of us who really can’t be bothered to sort this all out, there are some wonderful little gadgets that can be set up to dispense the right tablet at the correct time of day or on certain days.

Really it seems the only gadget you can’t buy is the one that will actually take the pill for you!!!
