Planning Retirement Online

The time of our lives!

We are in for the time of our lives!

That is the message from the UK’s Office of National Statistics who has just released details from their latest analysis of Britain’s national “Well Being” index.

happy older couple

Their report shows that older people, and especially those turning 70, are about to embark on the happiest times of their lives.

The index measured a range of aspects through questions submitted to people in seven different age groups.

On the results on those experiencing a very high rating of satisfaction with their lives overall, including contentment and a sense of worth, it showed that people over 65 had the highest satisfaction. Those over 65 scored 34.8 compared with the lowest score of 21.6 in the midlife 45 to 54 year age group.

The happiness peak covered from the period just before many people retire to just before their 80th birthday. Even on a specific question such as..how happy did you feel yesterday?... on a score system out of 10, the older age group over 65 rated 7.8 compared to an overall average of 7.4

Obviously health, family concerns and financial stability played heavily in underlining people’s reactions; but it does seem that today people are preparing better for their retirement years and understanding that this “third era” of their life heralds change and needs thought and planning.

The report from the National Statistics Office also showed that people in Northern Ireland gave higher ratings for each aspect of their personal well-being than those in any other UK country; while people in London on average reported the lowest levels of personal well-being, although the score has gone up since the last research was taken.

Interestingly the West Midlands had the lowest average rating in worry and anxiety of any English region, although overall rates have improved everywhere, hopefully indicating lower levels of stress across the population.

If you have any thoughts on whether you are happier in laterlife, either as you prepare for part time work or full retirement, or as you enjoy full time retirement, do please let us know.
