GET TALKING!

It is appalling news that more than a million older people in the UK don’t speak to anyone – literally anyone – for a month or more.

That is extreme loneliness and something that should not be happening the UK now. No wonder some telephone scammers meet with success; after a week of total silence for some a call from almost anyone can be welcome.

One problem here is pride. Older people today were born in an age of self resilience and admitting to loneliness can appear to them to be admitting failure. Of course it is not, life and times change and if family or friends have moved or even died, then suddenly life can become empty. Not everyone has the physical capacity or mental independence, or even the money or transport, to join new clubs, and suddenly life becomes very quiet indeed.

Now Age UK is trying to help tackle loneliness in older people by organizing a Big Chinwag.

This takes place on Friday June 19th and the idea is to raise money to help lonely older people. The idea is simply to get some people together and everyone who comes makes a donation to Age UK for this specific cause.

Interestingly here at LaterLife we tried to find the origins of the world Chinwag but the most we could find was that the expression started in around 1870 in the UK for a “good old talk”. The saying quickly caught on and was very popular in the early decades of the 20th century.

Age UK says your Big Chinwag can be a short and simple 30 minute chat event, or people can be invited to tea for longer chats. You could arrange a cake sale with proceeds going to Age UK, a quiz, or an evening chat event.

They have a host of ideas and free downloadable resources to make this day work. Of course you could always take it a step further and invite any older people in your area along with your friends for an afternoon of chat. That way you can raise money but also contribute by meeting more local people – it might surprise you who hasn’t had much human contact over the previous days. People keep loneliness so well hidden.

And you may benefit as well but making new friends through organizing a chinwag.

All you need do to get started is to register your interest with Age UK below and they will then provide all sorts of information and assistance.

It is totally amazing what ancient civilisations discovered so many years ago.
