What's On: Join Dryathlon and give up
alcohol for January!

NEW! For 2015. Over the past few years we have run a regular feature on What’s On across the nation; but as the internet becomes more and more readily available for everyone; it is now easy to find out what is going on in your local area.

So, instead, we are switching to What’s Happening in our favourite Charities. Each month we will bring you up to date across a number of key and lesser known Charities; what they are doing and how to get involved if you might be interested.

If you have a favourite charity, or are involved in fundraising for a Charity – let us know. We would love to cover some personal stories, especially if they show how fun and rewarding it can be to help raise money for really important causes.

Donate: Let's beat cancer sooner

Can you do it? Give up alcohol for a whole month? For many people our age, we tend to feel after a lifetime’s hard work the odd evening tipple is something we deserve. More than that, it has often become such an ingrained habit that we never even consider stopping.

Cancer Research is challenging everyone to help beat cancer – and help themselves – by giving up alcohol for the entire month of January. The idea is to raise funds for their research, but also to help you feel fitter – and save money as well!

They have put together a terrific website which explains how to become a “dryathlete”; and offers lots of support, help and idea on how to take part. It demonstrates how by just giving up those few drinks a week you can save thousands of calories!; a test to check your willpower; and also a host of fundraising ideas.

More information here.

But joining in the Dryathlon is only one way to help Cancer Research. This Charity needs money of course to help fund research. They receive no government funding, so they are totally reliant on the money raised.

But they also are looking for help in so many areas.

For instance, Cancer Research runs over 550 charity shops across the UK, and they are always keen to take in any unwanted goods in good condition. They can be sold to raise funds for clinical trials and pioneering research. They are always needing shop volunteers as well and working in a Cancer Research shop can be a great way to meet new people as well as help out in such a good cause.

The charity also runs various events big and small throughout the year and volunteers are always needed to help with the logistics and day to day activities.

Full information about all aspects is available via their website.
