Each month laterlife.com presents a feature from either The Artist
or its sister publication, Leisure Painter.
Leisure Painter inspires, guides and encourages
beginners and improvers with step-by-step instruction, as well as
general advice on ways to develop and progress. Experienced and
popular tutors set projects, describe their own working methods
and offer helpful tips and ideas

Stage 1
I drew the horse in the photograph above using grey coloured
pencil.

Stage 1
|
|
If the thought of drawing something
with so many legs makes you nervous, trace it! That is how I
learnt familiarity with form when I was learning to draw.
Eventually you be able to do it freehand
|
|
|
Stage 2
I used a light covering of cobalt for what was to be the shine
on the horse's back, and yellow ochre for the rest of the body
to form the lighter tone underneath the dark colour.
|
|

Stage 2
|
|
Stage 3
At this stage I added the colour that was not caused by light
or shadow – orange and reddish brown. |
|

Stage 3 |
|
Stage 4
Finally, all the dark colours were added: dark brown, reddish
brown and dark red. to blend the colours and soften them in
some areas near the top of the back, I used pink.
The background was a mix of violet, warm grey and cool grey.
