How
Initially he was living entirely on the state pension,
as his company pension scheme was insolvent. A good
friend let him have a pleasant one-bedroom apartment in a block with a swimming pool. It is five minutes from the beach at an affordable rent.
Through his Spanish classes Julien was invited to teach English to Spanish students and he
has developed a basic Spanish language course for English students. Although he detested
languages at school he is very interested in linguistics and now has a good mastery of
Spanish. He also works with a Spanish lawyer, whom he met through conversation classes,
doing both oral and written translations for clients.
Social circle
Julien has a wide circle of friends
of various nationalities - Spanish, Swedish, British, Lithuanian, Polish. He plays bridge,
whist and petanque and was a member of The Serenaders, a local group that sings popular
standards and songs from the shows, but gave this up when he became so much in demand for
his translating and teaching.
A new publishing project
Julien has just published The Trouble with Cephae, subtitled 'An Alien's
Guide to Nerja' (ISBN 84-607-7016-8), his first foray into the realms of science fiction.
It is a racy, fast-moving tale of which he has high hopes. Any profits from the book are
destined to help his daughter in England who has recently lost her home.
Future plans
I have no desire at all to return to the
UK, he says. I love it here. Nerja is
so beautiful with the sea and the backdrop of the mountains. Being here has given me the
opportunity to do all sorts of things and, even on a limited income, to lead a very
pleasant and comfortable life. Everyone, both the foreigners and the Spanish, are
welcoming and friendly and they seem much better tempered than they are in England. The open air life makes it easy to meet people. You
could never be lonely here. My single regret is that it is not very easy to get to know
more Spanish ladies.
