What to know about colds in later life

What to know about the common cold

How can one avoid catching a cold?

The answer is to emigrate or become a hermit. If you are in contact with other people you will inevitably be exposed to viruses.

Why do we get more colds when it’s cold?

We spend more time indoors in poorly ventilated houses and offices in winter and this may facilitate spread of infection. There is less sunlight in winter and ultraviolet light is known to kill viruses. The air we breathe is colder in winter and this may cool the nose and allow the virus to replicate at a higher rate. But colds are caught in warmer climes too, though the chances are reduced.

What to do if you have a cold?

Stay at home, drink plenty of fluids, rest and do not reach for the antibiotics – colds and flu are viruses, and therefore antibiotics will have no effect

Complementary remedy for the common cold

We know about zinc and echinacea. Now it’s the turn of hemp seed as a way to beat colds and upper respiratory infections.

Evidence for the curative effects of hemp seed comes from the University of Kuopio in Finland.  While researchers there were remarking on the effect hemp seed oil on skin dryness and  itching (and, anecdotally, on the improved condition of hair and nails), they also noticed a reduction in incidents of flu and related symptoms.

Hemp seed oil is used in Eastern Europe is a substitute for butter, and for  the study, people took 2 tablespoons of oil a day for 2 months. Visit www.motherhemp.com for stockists if you want to give hemp seed oil a go.
