Title: Film Noir
Where tough guys meet gorgeous, double-crossing dames in one of
Hollywood’s most enduring genres. This collection of four films
boasts all the right ingredients – double-dealing scams (Double
Indemnity starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck), doomed
relationships (Rita Hayworth as the eponymous seductress in
Gilda), suspicion and innuendo (Humphrey Bogart in In A Lonely
Place, alongside the gorgeous Gloria Grahame and private eyes
and hit men (Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner in The Killers)
Title: Westerns
Wide, open plains, horses aplenty, and cowboys, loads of ‘em in
this collection of four classic films from the Wild West.
There’s two of Hollywood’s finest – the laconic legend that is
John Wayne, starring in Tall In The Saddle, and the mean and
moody Clint Eastwood, starring in High Plains Drifter, as well
as Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Jack Palance in The
Professionals. James Stewart completes this gun fighting gang in
Shenandoah.
Title: Award Winners
A quartet of films that earned plaudits and Academy Awards? in
their day and, over the years have earned classic status. The
four boast multiple Oscars?, from the politically-charged All
The King’s Men, which picked up a trio of statuettes, for best
actor (Broderick Crawford), best supporting actress (Mercedes
McCambridge) and best picture to James Stewart’s wonderful turn
as Elwood P Dowd in Harvey (he was nominated but lost out. While
Josephine Hull won best supporting actress); from the eight
Oscar? winner From Here To Eternity, which earned a gong for
Frank Sinatra and best picture award, To Kill A Mockingbird, a
three-time winner including best actor for Gregory Peck.
Title: Tough Guys
Unbreakable, ferocious and unrelenting - men who won’t be pushed
around and won’t take no for an answer. From the leather clad
rebel Marlon Brando in The Wild One (“What’re you rebelling
against, Johnny?” “Whaddya got?”) to Kirk Douglas who is
Spartacus, a noble man who takes on the Roman empire; with
Humphrey Bogart, the archetypal wisecracking, hardboiled
character in The Harder They Fall to Robert Mitchum’s terrifying
turn in the original Cape Fear, these are the toughest of the
tough.
Title: Musicals
A collection of all-singing, all-dancing favourites, that
would not be complete without the illustrious Fred Astaire,
starring with his most famous dance partner Ginger Rogers in Top
Hat, and again alongside Rita Hayworth in You Were Never
Lovelier. This leading lady (Rita Hayworth) enjoys fun and
dancing with Gene Kelly in Cover Girl, whilst Rock Hudson
and Doris Day complete the famous pairings in Lover Come Back.
Title: Modern Epics
A selection of titles that are truly worthy of their epic
tag, boasting an all-star cast headed by Alec Guinness in Bridge
On The River Kwai, with great battles from Anthony Quinn,
Gregory Peck, David Niven in The Guns Of Navarone, exotic
locations in the adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Man
Who Would Be King, with Michael Caine and Sean Connery and
literary source material from Peter O’Toole in Lord Jim, based
on a Joseph Conrad novel.
Title: Funny Ladies
Four films celebrate funny women from the golden age of
Hollywood comedy. Taking in two classic screwball comedies, with
wise-cracking, fast-talking women in charge – Katherine Hepburn
in Bringing Up Baby with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in His
Girl Friday with Cary Grant. Then two romantic comedies, girl
next door Doris Day alongside Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk, and
Kim Novak alongside James Stewart in Bell, Book And Candle.
Title: Historical Epics
Swords, sandals and togas aplenty feature in this clutch of
historical epics, which take in Romans (Kirk Douglas as the
slave leader in Spartacus and Russell Crowe as Maximus in the
powerful epic Gladiator), Mongol hordes (with John Wayne
starring as Genghis Khan in The Conqueror ) and more Romans,
Anthony Quinn as Barabbas, the man haunted after being spared
crucifixion, in place of Christ.
