“OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR”
This multi-BAFTA winning musical &
cult film brings together a cast of British icons in the first
ever retail release on 30th October 2006
Richard Attenborough’s stunning directorial debut, Oh! What A
Lovely War will be released on DVD for the first time after a 37
year wait on Monday 30th October 2006, just 13 days before
Remembrance Sunday. It’s the first time that this masterpiece of
1960’s British cinema has been seen on any home entertainment
format.
Lovingly restored for DVD, Oh! What A Lovely War, boasts an
all-star cast that includes John Mills, John Gielgud, Kenneth
More, Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave, Corin Redgrave,
Vanessa Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Ian Holm, Susannah York,
Dirk Bogarde, Jack Hawkins, Edward Fox and Maggie Smith. The
film received a staggering nine BAFTA nominations and marched
away with five awards, including Best Supporting Actor for
Laurence Olivier.
Beautiful, shocking and moving, Oh! What A Lovely War
re-interprets real First World War events as a musical,
featuring show-stopping set-pieces juxtaposed with the brutality
of life in the trenches. Using simple but extremely effective
cinematic techniques, the film follows the fortunes of the
fictitious Smith Family as they draw us through the historic
battles of World War One, both on the front and at home.
For this very special DVD release, Lord Attenborough has
recorded his first feature-length Audio Commentary. Also
included on the disc are three original documentaries, Welcome
To World War One, The Smith Family Album and Keep The Home Fires
Burning. All include never previously seen interviews with Lord
Attenborough, Corin Redgrave, Ann Skinner, Angela Thorne, Edward
Fox and Susannah York.
Oh! What A Lovely War began life in 1963 as a radio play written
by Charles Chiltern, and was adapted for the stage by Joan
Littlewood and her London Theatre Workshop. The screenplay was
written by noted thriller writer Len Deighton. Richard
Attenborough went on to direct A Bridge Too Far, Ghandi, Chaplin
and Shadowlands.
OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR is available to buy from 30th October 2006
from Paramount Home Entertainment UK
