Lionel Jeffries’ beloved film version of ES Nesbit’s THE RAILWAY CHILDREN is a tale that has inspired kids and parents alike since its release in 1970.
When Father is mysteriously taken away by the police one night, Bobbie (Jenny Agutter, Walkabout), Phyllis (Sally Thomsett) and Peter (Gary Warren) move to the country with Mother (Dinah Sheridan, Genevieve) to start a new, more modest life. The children wile away the summer days playing on the local railway, where they make the acquaintance of station porter Mr. Perks (Bernard Cribbins, Dr Who, The Wombles, Jackanory), and the Old Gentleman (William Mervyn), who waves to them from his 1st Class carriage every morning. In awe of the great steam locomotives that thunder down the track, the children’s resourcefulness is put to great use: one day preventing a derailment, the next saving an injured cross country runner; all whilst they await the return of their beloved Father.
To celebrate 40 years since the release, the digital restoration was premiered as the Closing Night Gala at Bradford Film Festival – just 30 miles or so from where most of the film was shot. A nationwide release follows on 2nd April, in time for the Easter holidays.
The recent stage adaptation of The Railway Children that premiered at the National Railway Museum in York, will be staged this summer in the disused Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, featuring working steam trains!
Look out for some kids’ fun days and special events along the Keighley & Worth Valley railway, including a press launch for the reissue, on the still-operating steam train that includes some of the original Railway Children carriages.
Extras: New interviews with Jenny Agutter, Bernard Cribbins and Sally Thomsett / New documentary: Now and Then: A Retrospective Documentary on The Railway Children (20 mins) / Special interview with children’s author Jacqueline Wilson
A live production of THE RAILWAY CHILDREN is taking at London’s Waterloo Station this summer, where the former Eurostar site will be transformed into a unique theatre space with audience seated either side of the real railway track. This breathtaking theatrical event features a real moving steam train, and is in support of the Railway Children’s Charity that aims to help homeless and runaway children throughout the world. £1 per ticket sale will be donated to the charity. The performances run from 4 July to 5 September 2010. Visit http://www.railwaychildrenwaterloo.com/ for more information
