South Asia Earthquake
                             November 2005

LATEST FROM HELP THE AGED

Responding to South Asia earthquake

Just a couple of weeks after the earthquake in Pakistan and India, Help the Aged’s Mobile Medicare Unit (MMU) treated over 300 victims in Jammu. Help the Aged is providing this relief through it’s partner HelpAge International and partner in India, HelpAge India.

The MMU provides people with access to medical teams, medicines, food, clothing and other basic essentials to meet the immediate priorities of those effected by the earthquake ie Injuries, exposure to the cold, food , water, and shelter.

The unit has visited the villages of Ishim, Salamabad, Dardkote, and Urasa in Uri. Relief has been taken 7km on foot from Uri to the remote village of Shahdra to help 70-80 victims, and 17km to Kamalkot, as the roads are severely damaged. These areas had not received any aid at the time of writing.

Help the Aged`s Mobile Medicare Unit (MMU)Around 100 – 200 woollen blankets and tents have been distributed to protect the people from extreme cold. Relief activities are already becoming tougher as temperatures are now dropping severely to a minimum of 9 degrees and some areas are already witnessing snow fall.

As well as mobile medical units, HelpAge India teams will operate community kitchens. Two more MMUs are moving to Srinagar, taking a team of doctors to treat the injured.

Help the Aged works through, and funds its international partner HelpAge International during times of international emergencies which threaten the lives and livelihoods of older people. Help the Aged is responsible for raising funds from its own supporters and is also part of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which brings together 13 of the UK’s lead aid agencies, and other supporters, to launch national appeals during times of major international humanitarian disasters.

We are also working through HelpAge International with a partner in Pakistan to assess the needs of older people in other affected areas.
