On your feet in later life

Edition 3

Carnation Footcare’s expert chiropodist Kimby Osborne continues her monthly question and answer column

DEALING WITH CORNS AND BLISTERS

Corns are the most common of all foot problems, with an estimated  80 per cent of women have suffered from hard skin or corns at some time. However, a survey from Carnation Footcare showed that 47 per cent of people admitted that they wouldn't recognise a corn if they had one.

What is a corn?

It’s a raised shiny dome of hard skin with a very hard shaped centre.  It causes pain when the sharp end, called the nucleus, presses on a nerve.

What causes it?

Pressure from shoes, especially new shoes.

How to treat it?

The easiest solution is to buy a packet of corn caps, available from chemists. Carnation Corn Caps cost £1.65, and  they will remove a corn within 10 days, in 95 per cent of sufferers. Each pack contains five all in one medicated dressings, to be reapplied every two days.

Why do blisters happen?

It is common for new shoes to rub against the skin. The skin rubs against the shoe or boot, and becomes hot and damaged, causing fluid leaks from the blood vessels. This fluid becomes trapped under the surface of the skin and forms a blister.

How to treat?

Carnation Hydrocolloid Blister Care dressings, priced around £1.99, provide relief from friction and pain, and create a controlled environment for rapid healing. The hydrocolloid layer absorbs the fluid from the blister to form a soft gel. This helps relieve pressure and create the right environment for healing.

Carnation Hydrocolloid Blister Care dressings are specially designed to conform to the shape of the foot, are clear and therefore discreet enough to wear with strappy shoes or sandals, and once in place should not be removed until they fall off naturally. A fresh dressing should be reapplied until the blister is completely healed. It’s a good idea, when wearing new shoes for the first time, to keep a pack in a handbag or pocket so you can stop a blister at the first sign of friction.

Carnation Footcare produces a range of footcare products from corn and callous caps, blister care, to bunion and verruca treatments and athlete's foot preparations, all available from pharmacies.
