Flu Jabs in later life

October 2004

If people tell you that they had the flu for a few days, chances are it was just a nasty cold. The flu is a lot more powerful and mutates every year in order to fool your body’s defences. Once contracted it attacks your immune system, leaving you weak and vulnerable to more serious illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia. If you’re over 65, or suffer from a chronic illness like asthma, heart disease or diabetes, you’re especially at risk.

Fortunately the flu jab is reformulated each year to help protect you against the latest strain of the virus. And contrary to popular belief the vaccine can’t give you the flu as it doesn't contain any live virus. Best of all it’s free*.

So now that you know a little more about the flu, why not make an appointment with your local GP before it starts to circulate. After all, prevention is better than cure.
