Keep secure over the winter
|
The scheme is free and aims to help vulnerable local older people who can call on the services of Alan Blakeman, a trained HandyVan fitter with a fully equipped van to install safety and security products in their homes. Now, Alan offers a range of
home security tips to laterlife. Pass them on to
any elderly relative, and use them yourself too : ·
Dont forget to lock both back
and front door when you are going out, even if it is just for a few minutes. Dont be tempted to leave your door ajar while you
pop to the shops. Check your windows are all closed, including those in upstairs rooms. ·
Consider putting a padlock on your
back gate, particularly if it is in a secluded area or if it backs onto an alleyway or
lane. · Be careful when
answering the door to an unexpected visitor, particularly after dark. Always stop to put the door chain on and check for proof
of identification. Do not let anyone in the
house until you are completely satisfied that their reason for calling is valid. Tell any helper or cleaner to do the same. ·
If you are going to be returning to
your home after dark, leave the outside light on so that you can find your keys and unlock
the door quickly when you get back. Leave an
inside lamp on a plug-in timer programmed to switch itself on when it gets dark. · Make sure you have a smoke alarm fitted, and that it is in good
working order. This is particularly important
if you are going to have open fires or burn candles. · Ensure that you have suitable locks and security
measures in your home. If you want to know more about the
