Why Exercise?
• It’s too late for me
• I’ve never exercised
• Exercise is for the young
• I’m worried about my health
• I wouldn’t know what to do or how to get started
Many of us feel that exercise is a
bit daunting whether we’ve had an active life or not. It’s so
easy to put exercise to the back of our minds and use excuses to
justify our lack of exercise.
But think of the many benefits of
exercise and you begin to realise how important it is to put it
at the top of your agenda, particularly now you’re beginning to
have a little bit more time on your hands.
Exercise has many benefits:
• Reduces the risk of dying
prematurely
• Reduces the risk of heart disease
• Reduces the risk of developing diabetes
• Reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure
• Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety
• Helps control weight
• Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints
• Helps older adults to become stronger and better equipped to
fight illness
• Helps increase confidence
• Helps relieve stress
• Improves sleep
• Improves flexibility
But most importantly exercise is FUN, an opportunity to meet
with others all trying to achieve some small improvements in
their lifestyle.
In order to start an exercise programme we recommend you speak
to your GP about introducing additional exercise into your life.
Consider what type of exercise you may enjoy, some ideas
include:
Walking Running
Cycling Yoga
Swimming Pilates
Tennis Dancing
Small steps you can take to improve your health include:
Walk to the shops don’t drive
Use the stairs not the lift or escalators
Take an evening walk after your meal
Use the housework as a workout – turn up the music and have a
dance!
Stand up while on the phone
Hide the remote control for the TV!
Park the car at the far end of the supermarket car park and walk
However for real, long term benefits you may need to have a more
structured approach to a new exercise regime.
