Where have all the minerals gone?

When researchers recently looked at two editions of a UK book ‘The Composition of Foods’ published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, they had a nasty surprise.
Comparing the 1940 edition with the one published in 1991, they found that 27 vegetables and 17 fruits analysed had lost hefty amounts of mineral content.
Over-use of the soil and pesticides are thought to be the main culprits, but whatever the reason, the argument for taking an all-round mineral and vitamin supplement seems like a good idea.
Choose a reputable brand like Solgar    ( www.solgar.com ) who make a large variety of supplements to meet all needs.

Don't forget your pacemaker

One thing you can’t leave at home when you go on holiday is any chronic medical condition like diabetes, asthma, heart disease. If these are part of your baggage, you should also get yourself membership of Medic Alert.
This international charity supplies emblems to wear as a bracelet or pendant engraved with your medical condition, personal identification number and a 24 hour emergency number.
It means that when needed, medical professionals can get vital information by a telephone call from anywhere in the world.
Medic Alert is suitable for allergies, implants, rare blood groups, people on maintenance drug therapy, even contact lens wearers. Their website is: www.medicalert.co.uk

The colours of age

Did you know that we see colours differently as we age? A 40-year-old’s lens transmits 30% of the blue light of the sky, compared to 2-3% at the age of 80.
This means we may be choosing rather brighter colours than we think for our clothes and our homes as we get older and could explain the lurid outfits sometimes seen on elderly bag ladies.
We also become more sensitive to glare. Sorry to draw your attention to all this, but there is a serious reason. Glare can cause vision distortion when driving at night, and if this happens you might benefit from anti-glare spectacles made especially for night-driving. Check with your physician or optician.
And you may as well learn another bit of rotten news regarding the ageing process. Bright sunshine and ultraviolet light produce a haze over older eyes known as fluorescence. A peaked hat or yellowish sunglasses reduce the effect. So that’s why elderly men favour caps.

Exercise - what's stopping you? Excuse No. 2

‘I’ve always been hopeless at sport. I don’t want to make a fool of myself’

Lots of people (women especially) hate sports at school, and the memory of being last in the egg and spoon race lingers on.
There’s evidence that people who exercise in their youth are more likely to continue or resume in later life than those who were junior couch potatoes, and they can even be divided into personality types. Frequent exercisers in youth are, apparently, more vital individuals with political or practical interests. Minimal exercisers are likely to be sensitive, anxious and artistic types.
But there’s nothing to stop you proving the experts wrong and bucking the trend – except what’s going on in your head!
