Your chance to
try Red Clover - free offer you musn't miss
Isoflavones you must
have seen the word every time an alternative to hormone replacement therapy is mentioned.
They are natural compounds found in certain foods that deliver a form of oestrogen and act
similarly to HRT (or ERT as it is known in the US). The foods containing them are red
clover, chick peas, lentils and soya not exactly favourite foods in a typical
western diet. All of these are now available in different combinations as health food
supplements.
You can get isoflavones in tablet form and reports from users
are encouraging. Women taking isoflavones for six weeks or so have reported fewer hot
flushes, improved condition of skin and hair, and increased well-being during and after
the menopause.
Maryon Stewart, founder of the Womens Nutritional Advisory Service, includes the
isoflavone red clover as part of the regime to reduce menopausal symptoms, following a
trial which showed that 78% women reported benefits gained from taking the supplement. The
trial used Novogen Red Clover, guaranteed from GM-free sources. It is available in
chemists and health food stores in packs of ten or thirty, price £6.99 and £18.49.
Laterlife.com has arranged with the makers for a free months supply (worth
£18.99) to go to the first 100 who apply. Get your sample now: just e-mail your name and
address to: novogen.UK@novogen.com by September 22nd 2000.

Tailor-made for
women
The WNAS has been
in existence for 16 years and offers scientifically based tailor-made programmes for women
(and men where applicable). They have clinics in London, Lewes and Hove and offer a
telephone consultation service. That means they treat people worldwide. Their
programmes consist of alterations to the diet, the inclusion of nutritional supplements
which have been clinically tried and tested, and an exercise and relaxation regime.
Conditions covered include the menopause (natural alternatives to HRT), irritable bowel
syndrome, osteoporosis, weight loss, fatigue and sugar craving.
Theyre running a Menopause Survival Day on 16th September on the Dixie Queen paddle
steamer which will cruise up and down the Thames from London. There will be a cookery
demonstration, exercise and relaxation workshops and a question and answer session.
Tickets are £75 but attendees will recoup the cost by receiving a free Goody Bag and copy
of Maryon Stewart's new book Cruising through the Menopause plus afternoon
tea.

Do you drink
enough? As you may know, we are told to drink 8 pints (thats 2 litres) of water
every day, the idea of which defeats me, never mind the practice. Apparently tea, coffee
and canned drinks dont count. Anything containing caffeine actually makes you pee
more.
Why is water so essential? Basically it offers a clean-out of the system, washes away
toxins, transports substances round the body, helps lubricate, reduces constipation.
Fortunately, pure fruit juices and even squash and cordials count as fluid, as does thin
soup and caffeine-free teas. And probably the tonic in a gin and tonic. But unfortunately,
not the gin.
Don't get indigestion
It happens at
all ages, and can get worse in later life. People do suffer indigestion after meals. Here
are seven rules to prevent it:
- Dont eat big meals. Small ones give the stomach less work
- Eat more slowly to peg production of digestive acids
- Dont lie down after eating, especially after fatty foods
- Dont eat large meals or fatty foods late at night
- Wear comfortable, non-restricting clothes
- Caffeine, citrus fruits and fruit juices, tomatoes all produce stomach acids. Note their
effects and cut down if necessary
- Sleep propped up with extra pillows to prevent heartburn
Exercise - what's
stopping you? Excuse No. 5
I dont have time to fit in exercise
Ask yourself a few questions such as, am
I really so busy? how could I reorganise? why is it so hard to
commit to something new?
It can be very challenging to fit a new commitment into ones life. The idea of
reorganising, juggling with time and space is enough to make many people want to lie down
and have a rest! In other words, its remarkably easy to spend a great deal of
stressful and unproductive energy on avoidance.
But when you think about it, once youre launched into a project, it quickly
becomes a routine part of life and often a source of satisfaction. So make a decision, put
it into action, and youll feel healthier and more virtuous at the same time.
