‘Help - please give some fashion tips for the older and fatter’

A laterlife visitor sent the above plea, so here goes.

Helpful fashion tips from Helen Franks

Firstly, there are never any hard and fast rules in fashion. When the most popular look was the big shirt and leggings, or long tops that covered hips and waist, or kaftans in lustrous fabrics, anyone with a spreading waistline or a bulging tummy (but slim everywhere else) had little to worry about.

But now, when the fashion look is mainly skimpy, narrow and navel-baring, those in laterlife have never had it so bad.

How about sticking to classics then? Unfortunately, these too are subject to the subtle changes in current fashion, and though it’s a good rule that you never throw out anything of quality, it may never quite work again.

The following guidelines are relative to today’s look, which accounts for guideline number one:

  • Don’t wear baggy t-shirts or over-sized shirts. They might make a great disguise but they look shapeless and dowdy

  • Choose soft, draping fabrics rather than stiff, crisper ones. Soft jerseys, silky or crepey fabrics skim rather than cling and don’t add bulk

  • Go for on-the-knee length or near-ankle-length skirts or dresses, with  a smooth, straight or A-line

  • Avoid tapered trousers and choose straight-leg or ones with a slight flare below the knees. Soft, draping fabrics are most slimming. Black is almost always best

  • Sweaters should be fine knit, not clingy, not bulky. No polo or roll neck - they may hide a slack jawline but they shorten the neck and over-emphasis an ample bosom

  • A shorter top that ends at just above hip level looks more modern and is less swamping than anything longer - but you’d need to experiment

  • Silky velvet in jewel colours makes for flattering tops. A shallow scooped neck makes a clean frame for the face

  • A sharply tailored suit with knee-length skirt or trousers works best in darker colours or black. Trousers make for a leaner line. Try a shorter jacket, even a slightly waisted one before you give in to the temptation to choose longer and straighter

  • For evening wear, floaty chiffon in a dark colour can work even with bigger sizes. The secret is to have a plain, long-narrow-sleeved top over a long, slimline skirt perhaps with some beading at the hem and a narrow matching beaded scarf to wear like a choker at the neck

  • Always choose clothes that don’t add bulk and aren’t too fussy. Heavy square shoulders, tops with sequins or any but discreet beading are out.
