Introducing

Nutricentre’s Q & A section

Suppliers of complementary medicine, Nutricentre (now offering their range of products in a number of larger Tesco stores), are providing laterlife visitors with the opportunity to ask questions on health issues.

The Q & As are produced by Jo Rawlinson in conjunction with the Nutricentre. Jo is a trained complementary health practitioner who regularly works with and writes on behalf of the Nutricentre.

Q:  I am prone to both eczema and dermatitis. I have tried prescribed medication and am now using a vitamin E cream and Aloe Vera gel. Nothing relieves the pain and discomfort. Please help.

A: There is a direct link between diet and skin imbalances. In Chinese medicine, skin conditions are related to the lungs and colon, both organs of elimination, which implies a food-related allergic response. It would be a good idea to find a nutritionist who can test for allergies and can identify if you have any nutritional deficiencies.

Antioxidants are crucial for skin health. Include plenty of fresh fruits, salads and vegetables in your diet. Cruciferous (cabbage family) vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, sprouts are excellent sources of antioxidants. Other rich sources are found in spinach, tomatoes, tea, garlic, berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry or blackberry).

The most common foods to cause allergic reaction in the gut, leading to skin complaints, are dairy and wheat. You could try avoiding these along with refined foods (white bread, cakes, biscuits), cheese, citrus fruit, vinegar, salt and sugar.

There is evidence to suggest both eczema and dermatitis can be triggered by a deficiency in B vitamins and essential fatty acids (EFAs), especially GLA (gamma-linoleic acid). The best form of fatty acid supplementation is Evening Primrose Oil.

Q: Can you help put a spring back in my husband’s step? He has been under a lot of stress and has become constantly tired, and irritable. Also, his libido has just about disappeared.

A: Stress creeps up in stages, through which the body adapts, to a point. Once it’s been going on for weeks or months, the body becomes exhausted and no longer able to cope.

There is a group of herbs called adaptogens which help the body deal with change – mental, physical or environmental – by supporting its natural basic and vital functions. One example is the adrenal glands, at the centre of the ‘fight or flight’ response activated by stress.

Your husband could benefit from taking Rhodioloa Rosea, a Russian adaptogenic herb for stamina and sexual well-being.
