THE LATERLIFE CHALLENGE 2009
You've probably seen the recent announcement of this year's Laterlife Challenge and some great entries are already coming in, some of which we will be publishing during the month. We'd love to hear how you, or someone you know, are making the most of your retirement. It doesn't have to be earth shattering, we would like to hear, and you can win a prize just by entering even if you don't win one of the Laterlife Challenge awards. Part of the reason for the Challenge is to share knowledge of the interesting things we are all doing in retirement and share a bit of inspiration. Details can be anonymous if you wish. So do enter. Categories we are particularly interested in are: New experiences, Being active in later life, Doing something for others, Discovery and Ideas, and under our more unusual heading Spirit of the 60s. To find out more read the Challenge overview and then just complete the online entry form. Since the launch of the Challenge Staffordshire Gliding Club have kindly offered an additional prize of a Glider Flight for the winner and a friend which will be in a separately judged category of 'Active in later life'.

Join Neil Dwane, manager of the Allianz RCM European Equity Income Fund, and Andy Parsons, Advice team manager at The Share Centre, live from to discuss ways for you to keep a hold of that income stream and to provide expert answers to your questions. GUIDE GUIDE - LATEST UPDATES We believe that our series of laterlife Guides is a valuable resource for laterlife readers, so we want to remind you what's there and encourage you to make use of the guides. Each month we highlight the latest guide we've updated, so even if you've taken a look before, it's worth another visit to remind yourself and see the latest updates. This month we're taking a look at our Guide to Arts and Crafts. Arts and crafts of all sorts have made a big comeback over the last few years and stores such as Hobbycraft are very successful. So it's worth taking a look (or another look) at our Guide to this subject, which contains information on some of the things that are available as well as providing some general information on arts and crafts. The first page sets the scene and provides an introduction to the topic of arts and crafts. In particular, there is a list of some of the benefits to be gained by taking up one of these activities, as well as the enjoyment that can be had from them. It then lists the activities that are talked about in the rest of the Guide. The second page is about the first of the crafts that are covered in the Guide - knitting. The page provides information on where to look for help if you are just starting to knit. It also tells you about knitting shows you can visit if you have an interest in knitting and tells you how you can join the Knitting and Crochet Guild, if you want to share your hobby with others. Page 3 of the Guide is about Scrap Booking. this is not one of the traditional crafts but it is becoming very popular as a way of preserving memories and of indulging people's imaginations. The page introduces you to it and provides a link to a beginner's guide if you want to get started. Next is a page on Cross Stitch. It tells you about the Cross Stitch Guild, which you can join, and provides help with getting started. There's also a piece on tapestry, which you can do in conjunction with cross stitch. The next craft is Wood Turning and the page tells you what a sociable activity it is! It also tells you how to get started and warns you about some of the dangers - using a lathe is something that requires care! More and more people are turning to Card Making and the page on this particular craft introduces you to some of the benefits. It tells you where to go for some help and points out some of the benefits of making your own cards. The next page is about Willow Weaving, which is something a bit different and about which you may not have thought too much. Take a look and see what's involved, where you can learn how to do it and about some of the advantages of doing it. The page on dry stone walling is also one that might introduce you to something out of the ordinary. By learning how to do it you could then help to restore and preserve the dry stone walls that are such a predominant part of our countryside. So have a look and see where you can take a course on it and where you can find out more information on it. Finally, there is a page on Activity Breaks. Taking an activity break involves having a short holiday that includes learning something at the same time. They cover a whole range of activities including arts and crafts. So take a look and find out the range of things you can do, where you can find out about them and the pleasures to be had from them. Learning to do some sort of craft can be lots of fun, it can be therapeutic, sociable, healthy and very enjoyable. So have a read of the Guide and get inspired to have a go. Take a look, too, at all the other guides in our series packed full of useful information and, if you have any thoughts, please share them with us. SITE FOCUS Focussing on a section of the site that could be new to you or which you may want to re-visit. CELEBRATING THE OCCASION One of the sub-sections shown on the Site Map page of the website is 'Celebrating the Occasion'. It consists of four links that might enable us to make our celebrations in later life even more memorable. There are lots of reasons to celebrate as we get older: significant birthdays and anniversaries, the birth of grandchildren and so on. We hope that, by reading our contributions, you may get some ideas to help you make the most of your celebrations. The first link is to the short breaks that are available through Warner Breaks. Taking a short break will help you to make your celebration different and therefore memorable. You might choose an experience break, in which you combine the break with learning about something - antiques, for example. So have a look and see if there is anything that inspires you. Warners also offer deals for laterlife readers, so you can take advantage of that. The next section is about flower deliveries. Nothing quite sums up our feelings for someone like a lovely bouquet of flowers with an accompanying message. So take a look at this page, which tells you about a number of flower delivery services that you can choose from. The next section is about 'What Makes a Good Party?' If you aim to celebrate by throwing a party, look at this page to get some ideas about how to set about making it a huge success. There is also a link to our Guide to Organising a Special Party, which provides five pages of hints, tips, ideas and information on how to make it just that - Special. The final part of this section is about 'Things to Do and Venues'. This page provides links to a range of organisations that can help you make your celebration one to remember. They include balloon ride companies, ticket booking organisations, restaurant and hotel guides, caterers and entertainers. So have a look and get some ideas. PLANNING RETIREMENT Take a look at the schedule of Planning Retirement Courses for 2009.
August September We normally limit the workshops to 12 people, so that everyone gains the maximum benefit - so book your place soon. Plus there's the online retirement planning workshop which you can do from the comfort of your own home! Why not take a look at our separate retirement courses web site?
