TRAVEL IN 2009
Award winning travel writer, broadcaster and photographer Hugh Taylor spotlights destinations and topics in the travel guide. This month: LYNTON & LYNMOUTH - Devon's Siamese-twin resorts TUSCANY - Tasting the flavour ANTWERP for Rubens and rocks View all the destinations in the Travel Guide or go to the relevant index to find what you are looking for:
UK & IRELAND INDEX As well as this month's current features you can always search our past articles, too. Visit the laterlife interest index and the healthwise-index (covering articles in the last 2 years - both of which also provide links to lead you to earlier articles). Don't forget - you can also use the keyword site search facility on every page to find anything on the laterlife site. GUIDE GUIDE - LATEST UPDATES We believe that our series of laterlife Guides is a valuable resource for laterlife readers, so we want to remind you what's there and encourage you to make use of the guides. Each month we highlight the latest guide we've updated, so even if you've taken a look before, it's worth another visit to remind yourself and see the latest updates. This month we're taking a look at our Guide to Mastering the Internet. More and more over-50s are using it for a variety of reasons and it can be a real boon for us. If you are new to it or haven't even taken the plunge yet but would like to, the Guide will give you an introduction to the Internet and hopefully encourage you to take advantage of what it has to offer. The front page provides a general introduction to the Internet, including a list of some of the main benefits and some of the dangers. Reading these lists will help put it all into perspective so that you can read the rest of the Guide with a little more understanding of what's involved. The second page is about Shopping Around using the Internet. The Internet is the most convenient and the cheapest method of shopping around. This page explains how we can do it and gives some of the most helpful websites on the Internet for us to do so. One of the most common uses for the Internet is for looking for and booking holidays. Page Three of the Guide helps us to do this by giving some general help and ideas and then providing some specific websites that will help. The Internet is a wonderful source of information on every topic we can think of. The next page provides help with finding that information on topics such as health, news and weather, hobbies and general information. It obviously can't cover every topic but the tips it gives for those topics should provide a template for other subjects. The Internet can help with social contact in two ways, as Page Five of the Guide explains. There are websites through which we can meet people online, without ever necessarily meeting them, and lots of people like to do this. However, the Internet can also help by putting us in touch with groups of people who like to do the same things as we do, so we can join these groups. You can, for example, find local walking groups or other hobby-based groups. Or we can find out how to contact our local University of the Third Age (U3A) branch so that we can join one of their activities. Find out more by reading this page. It includes a link to our own Laterlife online group, which you can look at and join up to. One of the biggest advantages of the Internet is its convenience. Read the Convenience page to find out how to do all manner of things much easier and quicker. For example, food shopping can be made much simpler, as can banking and buying tickets for travel and for events. These and other examples are shown so that we can get a feel for the possibilities that are open to us via the Internet. The final page is a feedback page in which we ask you to give us your feedback on this, or any other Guide and to suggest other topics on which you would like to see a Guide. If you have any thoughts or ideas, please tell us so that we can provide you with the guides that you want. So take a look at all the other guides in our series packed full of useful information and, if you have any thoughts, please share them with us. SITE FOCUS Focussing on a section of the site that could be new to you or which you may want to re-visit. VOLUNTARY WORK Part of our comprehensive section on Working in Laterlife is a page on Voluntary Work. Although it is only one page, there are links to many other pages that will help, if you are interested in giving something to the community through voluntary work, as many people are. The first link that it provides is to our Guide to Voluntary Work, which will provide you with lots of help, ideas and guidance if you do want to venture into the voluntary sector. The Voluntary Work page tells you where you can find out about voluntary work in your area and there is a link to a website that will show you where your nearest volunteer bureau is. There is then some information on the Retired Executives Action Clearing House (REACH), which helps people with some sort of professional expertise find challenging and interesting positions in the voluntary sector. There then follow links to many other voluntary organisations that might interest you, including one or two that will enable you to volunteer overseas, should you wish to. There is a lot of information on the page and through the links that are on it that will help you to find voluntary work. Many retired people like to join the voluntary sector for a variety of reasons and it can be very rewarding. So take a look and see if it's for you. KEEP IN CONTACT We welcome any suggestions and ideas for
topics of interest to the over 50s that you would like to see covered and any
comments you have either on this newsletter or the site itself. Please Until next month, enjoy your laterlife! Tony Clack P.S.
