LATERLIFE GUIDES - NEW GUIDE TO COMPLAINING!

Man shouting into phone with frustrationWe tend to be optimistic and focus on the opportunities in life here at laterlife so the last thing we want to do is reinforce any stereotypes of grumpy old men and women.

However, we should complain when we have proper reason to; if we're paying for goods and services it's only right that we should be treated properly. On the other hand, complaining for complaining's sake can be counter-productive and probably does nothing for our blood pressure and general health! So be selective but don't be afraid to do it when necessary.

When the need arises use our Guide to remind yourself how to be as effective as possible and to assert your rights as a consumer. If you have any hints or tips that you would like to share, or stories about complaining, please use the
Guide feedback form.

GUIDE TO GRANDPARENTING

If you haven't yet seen it take a look at last month's Guide to Grandparenting

Plus there are all the other guides that we've published over the last 18 months (from Planning Retirement and Concessions and Discounts, to Holidaying Alone). Visit the 'Laterlife Guides' section with its own button in the navigation on the left.

GUIDE GUIDE - LATEST UPDATES

We believe that our series of laterlife Guides is a valuable resource for laterlife readers, so we want to remind you what's there and encourage you to make use of the guides. Each month we highlight the latest guide we've updated, so even if you've taken a look before, it's worth another visit to remind yourself and see the latest updates.

Last month we looked at our Guide to Making the Most of our Money. In these days of credit crunches and recessions it can be even more important than usual to get the most that we can from our financial resources.

Alongside this is the fact that one of the benefits of getting a bit older is the fact that we can often get things cheaper than younger people because of age-related discounts that are available. If we can take advantage of these discounts we shall obviously be able to make our money go further. Have a look, then, at our Guide to Concessions and Discounts where you will be able to find out, or remind yourself, the types of discounts that are available to us.

The opening page is a general introduction to them with some advice on how to approach the whole area of getting 'money off'. It links to the other two pages and provides some food for thought.

The second page looks at those concessions and discounts that are available through the public sector. some of these are obvious, such as the State pension but others may not be so well known. Even those obvious ones can sometimes be more complex than we realise and sometimes we need to know the right questions to ask. There are some thoughts on how to get the most from these State concessions and links to sources of information on them.

The third and final page looks at concessions in the private sector. The examples that are shown are national rather than local because it would be impossible to detail every local discount. Take a look and see the types of discounts that are available and don't forget that there are many local shops and businesses where you live that will give discounts to older people.

One of the objectives of the Guide is to get you thinking about discounts so that you are aware of them when you are out and therefore ask for them whenever you can. We all know the downsides of getting older - let's ensure that we take advantage of the benefits, too.
