GUIDE GUIDE - LATEST UPDATES

We believe that our series of laterlife Guides is a valuable resource for laterlife readers, so we want to remind you what's there and encourage you to make use of the guides. Each month we highlight the latest guide we've updated, so even if you've taken a look before, it's worth another visit to remind yourself and see the latest updates.

This month Guide to Making the Most of our Money

We're all aware of the current 'credit crunch' and recession. For  retired people, the blow has come because of the fact that interest rates  dropped dramatically and have remained low for some time now. Therefore the savings that we might be relying on to provide some income through the interest has dried up. Therefore, it's even more important at the moment to ensure that we're making the most of our money. We might not be able to get a lot but it's important that we get what we can.

The principles of making the most of our money are on the first page. Once you have read about the principles, go to the more specific pages, the first of which is Analysing our Finances. It talks about why we should analyse our finances, what to do before you retire and how to go about managing things financially once you do retire. Even if you have already retired, it's worth reading this page because there may well be some things that you're not doing.

It talks about the importance of knowing your budget and the next page is about how to construct a budget for retirement. It also gives you some things to think about once you know your budget.

If you think that you might want some help with making the most of your money, look at the next page of the Guide, which is called Getting Financial Help. It's not all about financial advisors, although they are mentioned. There are also lots of links to websites that will help you with your financial affairs and will help you generally to make the most of your money.

If we're going to make the most of our money, we need as good a return as possible on it. Have a look at the Where to Put it page for some thoughts on where we can put it in order to achieve this. As we said above, at the moment it's difficult to get huge returns but that's no reason not to try to do the best we can. Eventually, of course, things will return to 'normal' so we need to be well placed for when they do.

Finally, read the page on Spending Wisely. There are lots of tips and links to other websites and it's all designed to help you to spend money in the most effective way so that you're not wasting it. One of the links is to the laterlife Guide to Concessions and Discounts, which will help you to take advantage of what's on offer both in the public and private sectors. The less we waste the more we have to spend on enjoying our retirement and later life.

We should always want to make the most of our money so that we have the maximum that we can for having a fulfilling and enjoyable retirement. When times are tough it's even more important, so read the Guide and pick up some tips for getting the best out of our finances.

SITE FOCUS

Focussing on a section of the site that could be new to you.

As part of our enjoying Laterlife section, there is a sub-section called Sports and Activities. On this page there is information on a variety of sporting activities that you might enjoy in later life, as well as links to other pages on the site that may be of help to you. If you've been inspired by the Winter Olympics, then maybe now is the time to start a new sport or activity of some sort.

When you go to the Sports and Activities page you'll find that the first piece of information is for those who want to watch sport and there is a link to a website through which you can buy tickets for all kinds of sporting events.

There is then a link to an online magazine on which you can find information on a whole list of activities from archery to trekking and which has links to many specialist sites where you will find out even more information about your favourite sport or activity - or the one that you think you might try.

Following that, there is information on a range of activities including archery, cycling, golf, winter sports, rambling and more. There are links to other websites that will give you more specialist information on these things.

Finally, there is a link our Hobbies and Interests Guide that has more information on Physical Activities and Sports.

So have a look at this part of the laterlife website and it may inspire you to take up a new activity.
