Over 50 and loving it!!

Independent Reading !

Over 50s favour classic romance novels and tales of passion over bestsellers

Many of us these days like to keep up with the times, look fashionable and well read. We keep track of the various best seller lists and the top 100, just so we can impress people by saying ‘oh yes I’ve read that.’ However the older generation don’t feel the need to follow the crowd, they just read what they like, shunning bestsellers such as Harry Potter for romantic classics like Pride and Prejudice and Great Expectations. Less than one in five people over 50 say that they had been influenced by literary awards such as the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Prize.  They also like to read about travel and with the kid’s gone and a little extra cash, they can afford to go off on holiday and really enjoy it!

New research out today reveals why so many people are enjoying themselves when they’re over 50! A huge 92% of people over 50 go on holiday regularly, taking the time to see destinations rather than the ‘flop and drop’ style holidays younger generations go on.

Travel also influenced people in their choice of reading. Most of the people surveyed liked to read about where they had been and where they were going, rather than just following the crowd and reading the latest top ten. The reading habits of over 50s bring out a bit of the romantic in them as well! With all that extra time and cash, they could afford to put some romance back into their lives with 21% of men after the elusive but haunting Scarlet O’Hara and women after the gentleman scoundrel found in Mr Darcy, maybe a little Arabian Nights as well?

So, what’s so bad about reaching 50? Well it would seem there’s very little! Money, travel and romance, what more could you ask for!

  • A quarter of people surveyed said that Pride and Prejudice was their favourite novel

  • Great Expectations was the second favourite – 17%

  • Harry Potter was the least favourite book from the list with 6% of the vote followed by Bridget Jones’ Diary with 7%

  • Mr Darcy and Scarlett O’Hara were the joint favourites of characters that over 50s would like to dine with, each receiving 21% of the vote

  • Not surprisingly, Mr Darcy was the female favourite, with 34% compared to 7% of men

  • Scarlett O’Hara was a winner with the men with 26% of the vote compared to 15% of women

  • One in ten would like to have Italian charmer Captain Corelli to dinner

  • Over 50s are less interested in ‘flop and drop’ style holidays, they like to read about the places they have been to or destinations that they would like to visit

  • Over 50s are travelling more than ever with a huge 92% going on holiday

  • Just over three quarters of this age group enjoy sightseeing whilst away – a sign that they like to keep active and are perhaps seeing the sights that they have read about

  • Despite huge publicity, less than one in five said that they were influenced by literary awards such as the Booker Prize and Whitbread Prize
