number plates but it's worth a look first at the
DVLA web site. It has
a great facility to search on partial registrations and display the
different number plates available. There's even a facility to see your
personalised number plate displayed on the car of your choice.
When you are looking for registrations, common names will be hard to find
or expensive, there are initials, nicknames, other words e.g. SEX1E, WH05
MAD etc. but a bit of lateral thinking may be required to come up with other
ideas.
If you
don't want to put a personalised number plate on a car straight away,
for example if you want to give it as a gift - a DVLA certificate of
entitlement will keep the mark for you for 12 months (or longer if you pay
the DVLA extension fee).
Don't forget you can't make a car look newer than it actually is so for
example you can't put a W reg plate on an S reg car but you can do it the
other way round.
The DVLA web site of course only contains registrations that haven't yet
been allocated, so you may want to extend your search to private companies
and to auctions.

Federation. The DVLA run a number of number plate auctions each
year at which the most exclusive plates are sold, so if you are prepared to
pay for what you really want then you have a chance to do so! When you use
the DVLA search facility it will tell you whether you can buy a plate
outright or whether it will be part of an auction. Whatever you choose to
