Pets in Later Life

Retriever Puppy

Pets are great for all the family young or old. As we get older they can be a great source of companionship and comfort but we must be sure that we are willing able to give them the good care that they need. If we lead a hectic life, take frequent holidays and are regularly away, think carefully before you commit yourself to a pet.

If you do feel that you can give a pet the care it deserves, then consider what you want the pet for. If it's for friendship and companionship, then a dog is probably the best thing for you. A dog also provides an excellent reason to get out there in the fresh air for a good walk - so it can help you keep fit! It will probably also help you to meet new people; dog owners talk to complete strangers in situations in which you would never dream of striking up a conversation without both of you having a dog.

Cats, too, are obviously very popular. They also provide friendship (although not so much loyalty!) and are slightly less onerous to look after. On the other hand, it's very rare to take a cat for a walk!

There are many other animals that make super pets: rabbits, fish, hampsters and many many more. Remember, too, that if you don't want to keep a pet yourself, you could do puppy walking/training for Guide Dogs for the Blind or you could become a dog walker for friends and neighbours.

On this page, there are links to pet care sites, a site aiming to find a pet for you, a pet insurance site and others.

Looking for a pet

Looking for a pet? Whether you are interested in contacting an animal shelter or a pet shop, www.ukpetsguide.co.uk lists websites that  offer you the opportunity to locate the perfect pet online.

Once you have your pet, you'll want to keep it safe and healthy. Go to www.saferpets.co.uk for lots of tips and help on how to do so. It looks at general safety tips as well as looking after specific animals such as cats, dogs, birds and small mammals.

Also, look at www.petsworld.co.uk. Pets World have two stores, in Rugby and Blackpool and on the website is a lot of information about caring for a wide range of animals.

Pet Sitters

Animal Angels provides a professional pet sitting and house sitting service in your own home whilst you are away. Animal Angels presently offers a pet sitting service, which covers all the West Midlands, Birmingham, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Wrexham, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Powys, Gloucestershire, Cheshire, and surrounding areas. Most people consider their pets as part of the family. They love, care and worry about them, as much as any other member of the family. Therefore the thought of going away, and putting their pets into boarding establishments, causes feelings of stress, guilt and unhappiness. Allowing a pet to remain at home whilst they are away works out well, therefore, for both pets and owners.
