An email received from an
attendee following one of the Laterlife Open Retirement Workshops at
Birmingham NEC
Accompanying my wife, yesterday I attended the
above course, run by Dave Sinclair. At the end of the course I
completed the questionnaire, but felt that I would also like to
provide you with additional feedback.
I retired from my full time job 11 years ago, at the tender age
of 52, attending at that time a company sponsored pre-retirement
course which dealt exclusively with financial matters. So,
attending the course yesterday, I was initially attempting to
make comparisons with the previous course - but quickly realised
that this was not going to be possible.
If I am honest, I think that I was expecting to find the course
content purely one-sided - Dave on his side just giving out lots
of information, and us on the other side sitting like large
sponges, absorbing as much of the information as possible. The
reality was completely different, along with the others
attending the course, I found that I was being made to THINK
about retirement, in all of its aspects, and challenged to
question many of my pre-conceived ideas. The others attending
the course all seemed, like myself, to be relaxed and only too
willing to contribute to the discussions throughout the day.
The day was absorbing, and as we all left the venue, we
continued to talk about the course content, and not about the
journey home!
I am looking forward to 'comparing notes' with my wife - and
after a marriage of 38 years (still going strong) I anticipate
learning more about her - particularly aspects that relate to
the 'pack of cards' that we had to categorise and then place in
order of importance.
The very comprehensive handouts, in their attractive folder,
will not, I am sure, be left somewhere in the house to gather
dust - I am certain that I will be turning these pages from time
to time as the years go by, as well as visiting your website.
You will realise from the above, that I enjoyed and valued the
course very much, and know that my knowledge has been increased
considerably. It is more than 11 years since I last attended a
full day course (of any kind), and on reflection I did not,
yesterday, experience any feeling of a 'post lunch, graveyard
session'. The time just flew by.
Thanks to both you and Dave.
regards
Jack
