New Chair for Portsmouth CAB

When a distinguished Lieutenant of the Royal Navy retired and applied to the charity REACH, it wasn’t long before he was handed another big job. Larry Peer, MBE, from Stubbington, Hants, has been appointed chairman of  Portsmouth Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB).

Larry served for 35 years in the Royal Navy, leaving in the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Supply Branch. He had several appointments in the Portsmouth area at HMS Sultan and on the Staff of Commander in Chief, Naval Home Command.   Following his naval career he spent a short time as a retired officer in Portsmouth Naval Base prior to accepting a finance post in London for seven years.

Now retired, Larry says he is enjoying his new challenge:  “We have two CAB offices in Portsmouth staffed by a team of 60 trained volunteers. Their ages range from 20-80, but what they have in common is their immense dedication and sense of commitment.“

CAB has 700 bureaux in the UK, and offers easily available advice to anyone who needs it. Volunteers are supported by a number of paid full-time staff who provide the management structure, as well as some in-depth advice for more complex cases.

Larry`s job in Portsmouth includes chairing all the executive committee meetings, liasing with other organisations and overseeing financial and budgetary aspects.

He says, “This post offers me a worthwhile outlet, and makes full use of my business and management skills which otherwise would have gone to waste. I am very pleased that REACH suggested the CAB post. They matched my skills exactly, and the time that I give to this work neatly balances my leisure time. I still have plenty of time for travel and clay pigeon shooting!”

REACH  finds part time/expenses-only jobs for people who have time to give and who want to offer their managerial or professional career experience for the benefit of voluntary organisations in nearby locations. This job placement service is available free of charge to both volunteers and charitable organisations needing their expertise throughout the UK.
