Planning Retirement Online

This later life

Women invited to the Woman of the Year lunch, held at the Savoy in London every year, responded fairly predictably to a questionnaire put out by Boots. 79% felt that youth was more valued in society than age and experience. And 75% agreed that early retirement was a waste of talent. But more than 50% said that age did not matter in the industry they worked in and a wonderful 67% said that they had no desire to be 21 again.

56 year old business woman Sharon Haugh has sued her employers Schroders for unfair dismissal due to age bias. Haugh had a spectacularly successful record with the company and had received an award for outstanding achievement just days before she got her marching orders. Her boss, by the way, is 50.

Deaths in England and Wales in 2000:

  • Average age at death was 72.9 years for males, 79.1 for females.

  • Deaths due to accident or violent causes show average age of 48.3 for males, 66.4 for females

  • 22.3% of men died in their own homes, but only 16.1% of women, reflecting longer life expectancy and women living in nursing or old people’s homes.

  • Proportions of deaths of married men was 55% and widowers 25%.

  • In married women proportion was 24% of  those married and 59% of those widowed.

A recent NOP survey reveals bogus caller crime, or distraction burglary as it is officially referred to, is a more extensive problem in Britain than previously  believed. The survey results reveal that more than 300,000 older people may be  falling victim to bogus caller crime every year. This is a staggering figure more than 16 times higher than the latest Home Office official statistic of over 19,000 bogus caller crimes in 2001/2002. Many older people do not report the crime to the police.

The National SeniorSafety Campaign wants the Government to make bogus caller crime a separate recorded offence. The Campaign advises that people take precautions in their homes, such as locking doors, using door chains and asking for identification cards from uninvited callers. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the campaign to have bogus caller crime recorded as a separate offence by Police.
