Have fun cycling
in the great indoors

As the weather cools and the nights draw in, going outside for exercise and activities seems less and less appealing. This is when an indoor gym and pool would be wonderful. But sadly many of us can’t achieve that, but it is within the grasp of most of us to invest in an indoor exercise bike.

Health food of the month - Celeriac

As a child, most of us will have been familiar with celery. But times move on and today when you go past the veggie aisle in the supermarkets you will not only see celery but also celeriac. At this time of year celeriac will be coming into its prime, so it is worth knowing a little bit about it.

Take a look at this month's recipe inspiration for starters, mains and desserts.

Lakeland are the leading supplier in kitchen and homewares and we've teamed up with them to bring you a selection of vegetarian recipes.

Carrots may give colour, but parsnips add a similar flavour and sweetness with a whole lot more fragrance, so this isn’t as bold and daring as it might sound from the title.

International Travel in the 70s by an ageing hipster

Washing clothes the local's way 1975

Staying in hotels that don’t even register one star, sleeping in beds riddled with bed bugs, travelling on overcrowded buses with the locals, hitchhiking on cement trucks over the worst roads I have ever seen, having guns pointed at my face, going over a cliff in a bus and surviving. None of the above is 5 star comfort like I want these days, but each is burned into my memory as an adventure.

Community orchards
are for everyone

community orchard

What more quintessentially British image is there than that of a lovely country orchard full of trees laden with fruit, possibly with sheep grazing gently on the grass below?

But sadly orchards are a fading aspect of British life as more and more land is taken for higher income produce or building.

IVS: Peace Day 2016

The 21st of September is the International Day of Peace. Peace Day was officially recognised in 1981 when the United Nations General Assembly declared, in a resolution sponsored by the UK that the International Day of Peace, be a day devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace.

Peace Day has a different theme every year, with this year’s focus being the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. To inaugurate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters. The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as “a reminder of the human cost of war”; the inscription on its side reads, “Long live absolute world peace”.

This year, the International Voluntary Service asked its membership to send in stories from times spent volunteering abroad.

Jennie's special offers direct to you from Silver Towers

Dear Silver Travellers
How lovely that the days are still relatively warm even though September is upon us, and we’re enjoying a balmy autumnal breeze here at Silver Towers across the plains of Bloomsbury. It’s certainly been an interesting summer, with many of you travelling in the UK for holidays and short breaks, and writing reviews. from around the globe and on cruise ships almost everywhere.

Of course schools, colleges and Universities return to studies in the next week or two, which means that cities and resorts, especially in the Mediterranean, are quieter. Perfect, in fact, to enjoy the late summer warmth and relaxed atmosphere. We’ve been to Cyprus and Crete in October in recent years - it was glorious and we had the run of the place, practically to ourselves!

Alarm clocks set and coffee mugs at the ready, it’s an eye wateringly early start for us on Saturday when we’ll be loading Stanley the sturdy Silvertravelmobil and heading up the M40 to the Birmingham Cruise Show - come and see us, we have free tickets to give away, email And the Iglu Cruise Show takes place on Sunday 2nd October in Surrey - entrance is free and we’ll be there too after a spin down the A3. See the banner below for details.

Everyone at Silver Towers is more than a tad indignant at Jeremy Paxman’s recent comments about pensioners and older people. And at the age of 66 - he’s a silver traveller in denial! Take a look at our lively forum debate on the subject and we hope you enjoy the rest of our September newsletter too.

Relationship Column:

Over my career I certainly met plenty of people who were finding those changes hard. I know I found my transition difficult and missed my counselling and training work very much. I missed the brilliant and supportive colleagues in our shared office/sitting room, I missed the routine, and the wonderfully courageous people who trusted me to be alongside them as they struggled to make sense of their problems.
