The health benefits of turmeric

I have just been reading a fabulous book about life in Sarawak by Margaret Brooke. She was the Ranee (the wife of the English Rajah or ruler) of Sarawak in the mid 1800s.

In the middle of the book she describes how the old Dyak and Kayan tribes used to use turmeric as a medication to cure all sorts of ills. So it was interesting to see new reports out this week about the “wonderful” discovery of the health benefits of turmeric.

Health food of the month - Figs

If the fig was discovered today, it would be hailed as a fabulous new food…with a naturally sweet and scented flavour and packed full of great nutrients.

But because figs have been in the shops all our lives, they are not always given the appreciation they deserve.

Take a look at this month's recipe inspiration for starters, mains and desserts.

Your friends and family are guaranteed to go nuts for this amazing showstopper cake. Soft chocolate sponge cake sandwiched with a creamy peanut butter frosting and caramel sauce. The piece de resistance of this cake is the tower of snickers and caramel popcorn that tops the cake. This is a great cake for any special occasion from Father’s Day to birthdays.

Part 3: Pagan

‘Continuing’ on the boat to Pagan

The boat trip had been relaxing but too long. The toilet was high.
At the continual stops to unload cargo, it was interesting watching the men working. Carting huge sacks of grain up a flight of steps from the ships hold.
On deck they take one small stick as a counter, and running up the gang plank, deposit a load onto bullock drays. Scenes from 1930 movies of Africa and the Nile. Little girls come aboard selling food and fruits, but the quality is questionable. We ate curries and drank tea from the little shop on board.

The sweet summer scent of camomile lawns

Some years ago here at LaterLife we discussed the benefits of camomile tea…this has been popular for years offering benefits against inflammation, insomnia and anxiety. It is often known as the relaxing and calming herb.

But camomile lawns are also wonderful and it is surprising so little is written about them.

They have a wonderful history, the Elizabethans used to be particularly keen on camomile lawns.

Finding peace in
Northern Ireland

Volunteer Peter Thomas talks about his experience in Strangford.

I didn’t go for a holiday but to work at Glebe House, a cross-cultural centre for people from both Protestant and Catholic communities. This may not sound very adventurous to those of us used to rubbing shoulders with people of different faiths on an almost daily basis. It was still a surprise to me that children of different faiths, like their families in places like Belfast, live entirely separate lives and have no contact with each other

Relationship Column:

Over my career I certainly met plenty of people who were finding those changes hard. I know I found my transition difficult and missed my counselling and training work very much. I missed the brilliant and supportive colleagues in our shared office/sitting room, I missed the routine, and the wonderfully courageous people who trusted me to be alongside them as they struggled to make sense of their problems.
