Health food of the month: Skyr

Glass dishes with skyr desert

When we were kids, yoghurt was probably only just coming in as part of a normal everyday diet. Today the market for yoghurt has grown so big that entire shelves in supermarkets are filled with a huge variety of yoghurts. Low fat, different flavours, the variety of yoghurts we can buy now is incredible.

Now there is a new name on the block. Skyr (pronounced skeer) has gradually been creeping into shops and supermarkets as people discover it and find it a great alternative to traditional yoghurt.

“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.” – Alfred Austin.

Alfred Austin (30 May 1835 – 2 June 1913) was an English poet who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1896.

Gardening as Alfred Austin says is good for the soul.  Whilst we have all been adjusting to a new way of living – the positives are that we have been able to spend more and more time in our gardens or allotments.  For many of us that works wonders for our physical health as well as our mental well being.

There is nothing like the satisfaction from accomplishment, that comes with growing.  No fruit or vegetables ever taste better than the ones that are “homegrown” and it looks like there are an awful lot more people joining in.

Now is not the time for dental problems

man brushing teeth

There is now talk about the UK’s 12,000 dental clinics re-opening. That won’t come soon enough for anyone unfortunate enough to have suffered problems with their teeth, or even worse, tooth ache, at this time.

In the meantime it makes sense for everyone to look at their dental hygiene and see if they can improve their regular cleaning to prevent problems building up.

Balearic Outdoor Holidays - to be enjoyed not endured

Menorca Walking HolidaysBalearic Outdoor Holidays organise walking, painting, archaeology and learn Spanish holidays on the beautiful Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca.

We’ve been organising walking holidays on both islands for over 15 years and, during that time, many of our guests have returned to walk with us time after time. In fact, over 80% of our guests are repeat customers and we view them as friends. Rather than sing our own praises, here's some comments from guests who joined us during 2019.

“Thank you so much for an absolutely wonderful holiday. I can't remember when I laughed so much or ate and drank so much and the walking wasn't bad either!!!” Janet - Menorca singles walking.

"We both thoroughly enjoyed last week's "walking for softies".  Menorca is such a lovely island, the hotel was great, the group of people were lovely and, as ever, you both looked after us all with efficiency, tact and humour." Judy and Bob - Menorca easy walking.

“As always, I had a brilliant week! It's wonderful being organised and not having to think too much. Ate too much, drank too much, laughed a lot so feeling happy!” Anne -  Menorca Painting.

"One word feedback from an archaeological guinea-pig - brilliant!  You may quote me. Thanks again for usual J&C not-to-be-bettered week." Bron -  Menorca Archaeology.

Menorca Walking Holidays"I just want to say a huge thank you to you for last week. Katie was fabulous, an excellent tutor and such a lovely young lady. The bite size Spanish activities were just right (not too much to get your head round) and the walks were comfortable and interesting." Kim - Learn Spanish walking

"Thank you again for another fabulous week, can’t believe the weather yet again, plus a very nice group of fellow walkers." Roger and Penny - Menorca New Year walking.

“Many thanks for the excellent Mallorca walking holiday last week. So well organised, superb locations and so caring for all our various needs! A lasting memory until the next trip to a Balearic Walking Holiday – you even arranged great weather, marvellous for March!” Nigel and Jane - Mallorca easy walking.

"Just a quick thank you for a really wonderful holiday. We totally enjoyed the whole experience. Lovely walks, great company and probably the best restaurants and food you've treated us to." Brian and Dorothy - Best of Mallorca.

"A church, stalactites and stalagmites, classical concert on a lake, boat trip into a cave, dolphins, a converted railway line, paella, numerous stories, loads of laughs and the odd bit of walking thrown in too." Trevor and Mandy - Mallorca couples walking.

If you'd like to discover what keeps people returning to holiday with us time after time, drop us an email or if you'd like to speak with an actual human being, please call 0800 072 4832.

We look forward to looking after you.

John and Carolyn.
