Health food of the month: Almonds

An Xmas spread of oranges and almondsAlmonds creep into many meals at Christmas, with traditional recipes for cakes, sweets and of course marzipan all stipulating almond or almond meal as an ingredient. Almonds are also very popular as a tasty nut to accompany all those Christmas tipples!

But we shouldn’t be adding or eating almond just for its lovely delicate flavour. Almonds have been described as one of the most perfect foods because of their health benefits, and certainly they are a nut that can play a useful part in any healthy diet.

December Newsletter

The month with the shortest days and the longest nights, we can only hope that December’s daylight hours are cold and crisp with clear blue skies. Such days can be filled with warming winter digging and pruning, plus raking up and bagging the last of the fallen leaves.

Wet days are perfect for planning the garden for 2020, deciding what Dobies seed to sow and grow. It’s also time to tidy up the shed, clean seed trays and pots, sharpen secateurs and clean tools.

Evergreens provide interest in the winter gardens and trees, devoid of leaves, give structure, beauty and a place from which to hang bird feeders. Our feathered garden friends will be hungry this month and appreciative of extra food to help keep warm.

Seeing the lights is fast becoming a Christmas Tradition

Trees lit up for Christmas

A couple of centuries ago Christmas could be a drab affair.  The idea of lighting up homes and streets and even trees would have been greeted with total amazement.

Today even the smallest villages often put on specially lit celebrations for Christmas, and increasingly major thoroughfares and locations are organising professional and truly spectacular Christmas lights.

There's no holiday for our digestive systems this Christmas!

Man holding stomach

With the shops full of fabulous food and wonderful treats, it is incredibly hard not to over indulge at this time of year. The trouble is that, as we become older, we might increasingly find that after a lovely meal we begin to suffer from discomfort and even pain in the stomach and upper abdomen.

Grease will do birds a fat lot of good this Christmas

blackbird on garden feeder in snow

The RSPB is reminding Christmas dinner chefs not to put the cooking fat from their festive roast out for garden birds as the greasy mixture can damage their feathers.

Christmas is a time for feasting and living off the fat of the land, not least for garden birds. But doing so literally for our feathered friends could prove fatal. Cooked turkey fat and anything too salty can be dangerous.

The thought of taking a holiday by yourself might appear more than a touch brave, and you’re right! However, we are frequently told that once that first trip is under your belt, nothing could be simpler and you’ll wonder what took you so long. Here are our suggestions for getting started.

Thought that your walking holiday days were over?
Please think again.

Menorca Walking HolidaysBalearic Outdoor Holidays are Europe’s leading specialist for walking holidays "to be enjoyed not endured "on the Spanish Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca. We organise holidays for couples, singles and groups alike.

We’ve been organising fully guided walking holidays on these 2 islands for 16 years and have always aimed ourselves at the easier end of the walking holiday market. Our walks are fully guided, backed up with a vehicle tracing the route and are all of around 6 miles in distance. Great accommodation plus wonderful food and wine are also very much a part of our holiday package.

Having said that, people who first enjoyed our holidays 15 years ago when they were in their 60’s are now in their mid to late 70’s and many have told us that even walking 6 miles a day has become a daunting proposition. Balearic Outdoor Holidays is a family business that’s always viewed its guests as friends and nobody likes to lose a friend.

For this reason and without wishing to alienate any of our customers who enjoy our existing walking holidays, we’ve decided to launch a softer walking product for 2019. For these holidays, we’ll be walking between 3 and 4 miles a day on generally flat or downhill terrain and these holidays will include some sightseeing.
Other than this, the content of our softer walking holidays will be more or less the same. The walks will be fully guided with 2 guides and a backup vehicle should anyone need a ride along the way. The holiday accommodation is always handpicked and of a high level. It goes without saying that as with any of our holidays, the food and wine is fantastic as well. Also, with the walks being shorter, you’ll have an extra hour in bed!!

Menorca Walking HolidaysOur “softer” walking holidays for 2019 will take place during the following weeks:

Friday 15th March – Mallorca
Friday 31st May – Menorca
Friday 13th September – Menorca (singles only)

The holiday price of £989 includes the following:

7 nights bed and breakfast.
6 wonderful meals (These will be a combination of lunches and suppers. On the days where our meal is in the evening, a picnic will be provided. All wine is included with our meals).
5 fully guided walks.
Airport transfers and all other required transport.
Tea, coffee and biscuits during each walk.
Drinking water.

If this type of holiday appeals to you, why not send us an email or call us on freephone 0800 072 4832.
We look forward to hearing from you.

John and Carolyn.
