Whats happening
in the world of walking
Goodbye to foot and mouth and hello
to freedom to roam
At
last the right to roam process is getting into motion. The
first draft maps showing paths and access across open country and
common land are available to the public. The maps
at present cover the south east and north west of England, including part of Buckinghamshire and West Middlesex. The second batch, due out in June, will cover Hampshire
and Berkshire. If you want to see the maps and
inform the Countryside Agency if you think theyve left something out, look at their
website at www.countryside.gov.uk
Personalised weather
forecast
The Met Office service has teamed up with Vodafone and BT Cellnet to give mobile phone users a local, up-to-date

forecast at any time. You pay 25p-30p per
message and the payment is added to the monthly bill. Theres also the Mets
Time and Place service via SMS text messaging or WAP on all networks, with
payment automatic so theres no need to register. For

Want to be a walking
leader?
The
Ramblers Association is running a training day to
help find and support new walk leaders. The event
is being held in Derbyshire at the end of April, and the aim is for those participating to
go back to their own rambling groups and train others. Some knowledge of map reading and
experience of leading a walk or two would be helpful but is not essential.
Find out more by contacting main office: 020 7339 8521. To find a local group and for more information
about the Ramblers Association go to www.ramblers.org.uk
