Guide to Over-50s Internet Dating

Part 3 - Choosing a Site

Given that there are hundreds of options available how then do we decide which are the right sites for us to sign up to? Some things to watch out for are:

  • Your location will have an impact

It is easier to meet people, attend events and groups if you live in a city. The more rural you are, the wider you may need to spread the net for potential dates. Therefore if you cannot get into London or another city with singles events you may decide to sign up to a larger volume site than a special interest one where you may be narrowing the field too much.

  • Target the sites to meet your needs

Some adult sites are geared to as many short encounters as possible and a bit of fun. At the other end of the scale, others will not accept you unless you can prove that you are available to make a long-term commitment. Most of us try to find a reliable site that has members serious about finding a committed relationship.

  • Age is not an issue

The over 55’s is the fastest growing online dating group. Therefore choose a site that has captured this market.  See below for information on over 50 sites and making choices. We may not always opt for a site with “50” in the title.

  • But gender is

For the over 50s on most sites there will be more women signed up than men. This means men have more choice. Some men may also seek women significantly younger women than themselves although the advice generally given is to stick to your own age plus or minus 7 years. Nevertheless many women are successful in meeting partners through internet dating.

  • Costs and Membership

There are a few free sites, but not many attracting over 50s.  Most sites will let you put in your profile for free and see potential partners. This increases their database. However to contact people you will have to pay. Be warned that virtually all sites have automatic renewal. Before you do pay make sure you know how to cancel your subscription. If it is not clear, do not sign up. Membership prices are cheaper if you sign up for longer. Once you have signed up and paid many sites will try to encourage you to pay more by either signing up to a premium membership or suggesting a complementary site or service. It can be difficult to assess how these add value to the basic package.

Sites for Over 50’s
Many sites have been set up to cater for the “mature” market, but for some this can mean over 30! There are a number specifically aimed at the over 50’s.

50 Plus Club
Dating Over 50
Mature Free and Single
Friends Over 50
Fun Over 50

It is important to research different dating sites to ensure that any you sign up to, and pay money towards is going to deliver the results you want. Just because “over 50” is mentioned does not mean it will provide you with more eligible partners than another site.

Laterlife Review of Sites
If there are thousands of sites how do we choose the best? As mentioned above to decide which site suits our own particular situation requires an investment of time. If you do not have time but are prepared to pay for it you will find Dating Agents who will do it for you.

The trouble is you still have to vet the Dating Agent to make sure you are not wasting your money. From our research and personal experience we have highlighted a few sites below. These are not intended to be a definitive list, but they may help you to define your own criteria.
Founded over 15 years ago, has become one of the world’s largest and most popular dating sites for 18 to 85 year olds looking for a serious relationship for the long-term, as opposed to a quick fix. Prices vary from £9.99 a month if you take a six month subscription through to £29.99 for a single month (2016 prices). It recently joined with Meetic, which is Europe’s biggest online dating company. (You could therefore use your username and password for Meetic UK and other Meetic sites but hopefully with the right profile you should get enough interest on is easy to use and comes with dating and practical relationship advice, help with writing a profile, articles on a variety of topics, and privacy and security information. The advantage of Match is the size of its membership.

This is for people who are looking for a long-term partner and would like to be matched on compatibility. The eHarmony concept is based on the compatibility characteristics of successful relationships. In the UK eHarmony partnered with researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford to undertake research from thousands of couples from 18-81 and in relationships from 1-65 years. To join eHarmony you complete a comprehensive compatibility questionnaire, they then select a number of matches and at this point you pay your subscription (from £39.95 for one month through to £13.50 a month for 12 months -2017 prices). eHarmony will not accept anyone who is not available for a relationship. Therefore if you are separated but not divorced, you can complete the questionnaire and receive a personality profile, but will not be accepted for matching.

Media Sites
The Telegraph, the Times and Sunday Times, the Independent and the Guardian newspapers all have popular online dating pages. Signing up to one of these may suggest to others you have certain life values although not necessarily your political views. Indeed some people choose to sign up to more than one newspaper dating site to cover all avenues. You need to read the profiles.

50 Plus Club
The 50plus club is an online dating agency which also runs local groups and thematic groups where members organize regular meetings to discuss and exchange their views beyond the internet. There is also a magazine and newsletter. Full membership prices start at £19.90 per month.

Specialist sites
If you have a particular interest and would like to find like-minded people then a search on the internet will usually find a dating group to meet your interests. See also: Marie Claire's Article - 10 Best Dating Sites
