Coventry

This article series provided by National Express demonstrates some of the amazing attractions around the UK. Why not follow the National Express series as they suggest a new destination every month and help us all to make the most of the great days out in our own country.

A message from National Express:

"We're committed to always finding you the lowest fares possible to where you want to go. We've decided to make this as simple and easy as possible with our Low Fare Finder, which displays all of our FunFare tickets - our lowest fares are only available online.

FunFare tickets are available to book in advance to hundreds of towns, cities and airports across the UK. We also offer great-value coach travel to Europe with our sister company Eurolines.

These bargain fares are limited online exclusives, so if you see a fare you like the look of, then book it straight away because once they're gone, they're gone.

It’s not just cheap fares we offer, travelling with us means you’re guaranteed a seat onboard, and we also offer a really generous luggage allowance! For a full list of what's onboard our coaches take a look at our Travelling with us section here."

Unfortunately, Coachcard discounts are not available on any FunFare tickets.

Welcome to Coventry

There’s no shortage of things to do in Coventry, whoever you are! Explore everything from castles and manor houses to a wide choice of parkland, sporting venues, theatres, shopping, historical sites and more.

If you’re thinking of travelling to Coventry, sneak a peek at our city guide before you head off.

Coventry: for free

Coventry boasts acres of parklife and green spaces. The Allesley Park is a picturesque park bordered by unspoilt landscape, while the Allesley Park Walled Garden is a one-and-a-half acre model site of a Georgian garden showcasing vegetable beds, flowers and fruiting trees.

Coombe Country Park is an ideal place to visit with the family. With 500 acres of stunning gardens, woodland and lakes, it makes for a lovely walk or outdoor picnic. Those looking for a quiet place to stop can head to the Garden of International Friendship to read a book or watch the world go by.

Culture and Heritage

Coventry is filled with interesting museums, galleries and historical sites for you to discover.

Check out the Transport Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of British road transport, or the Midland Air Museum, with its unique aeronautical collection of books, photographs and aircraft itself. You can even explore your creative side at the Herbert Art Gallery, offering multi-sensory interactive displays, or the Mead Gallery, one of the largest purpose-built contemporary art galleries in the UK.

Want to travel back in time? Head to the Lunt Roma Fort. This archaeological site of a Roman fort invites you to tread the ramparts and imagine yourself training horses in the gyrus. Great fun for all!

Attractions

Head slightly outside of Coventry and you’ll find one of the UK’s most famous tourist attractions - Warwick Castle. A feast of medieval architecture, interactive shows and storytelling, dark dungeons, imposing towers, spellbinding tales and ancient legends…

Those after something a little less adventurous should take a trip to the beautiful Arbury Hall, a 12th century estate set in more than 100 acres of 18th century landscaped gardens, or St Mary’s Guildhall, thought to be the finest medieval guildhall in the country.

Also worth a visit is Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, where William Shakespeare courted his future bride. This pretty thatched cottage is situated just outside of Coventry – don’t forget to pack your camera!

Shopping

Coventry has a varied shopping scene. From major outlets and shopping centres to independent stores and quaint boutiques in and around the city, there are plenty of retail opportunities to suit all tastes and budgets.

West Orchids, Lower Precinct and Cathedral Lanes are the main shopping centres in Coventry, specialising in high street favourites. If you’re after something a little more exclusive, try Greyfriars Walk, City Arcade or Smithford Way, where you’ll be able to pick up everything from jewellery and fancy dress to lotions, potions and quirky clothing.

Coventry has a diverse and multicultural cuisine scene. You’ll find everything from high street chains to high-end brasseries, pit-stop cafes to charming teashops. We’ve picked our top three.

Where to eat and drink

Coventry hosts a good choice of restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets. We’ve picked our best of the bunch.

On a shoestring: Fitz2Eat. Cheap and cheerful food that hits the spot.

Middle of the road: Blue Bistro. Modern British cuisine with a Mediterranean twist set in romantic, medieval surroundings.

Splash the cash: Turmeric Gold. Award winning Indian Restaurant with an authentic vibe.
