Keswick – Bassenthwaite Lake- Where to Stay- Ravenstone Lodge Hotel

The countryside around Keswick is some of the finest in the Lake District and the perfect place for a relaxing mid-week or weekend break. We sent Alan and Louise to report on one of the areas country hotels.

Arriving on a cold and rainy January evening, Alan and I were met at the Hotel by Sue who gave us a warm welcome before showing us around and escorting us to our beautiful room with fabulous en suite and integrated wet room.

Ravenstone Lodge is a small privately owned, three star country house hotel, situated between Ullock Pike and Bassenthwaite Lake. The proprietors, Michael and Jane Cornish, have lovingly created a 21st Century hotel from an attractive 19th Century building, while sensitively maintaining its character. Their objective was to create a hotel that they themselves would want to stay in and return to.

The first thing we noticed was how warm, homely and comfortable it was and how perfect for a relaxing getaway. The bedrooms are all different shapes and sizes to suit a variety of needs and budgets. Each room has its own distinctive character and is named after one of the natural features located in the area.

They are all en suite with flat screen tv’s and radios. Wifi is available throughout the hotel, although the broadband speed reflects the rural situation.

The views from the terrace and conservatory are spectacular and there are many easily accessible walking trails close by. Walkers can order a packed lunch to take with them.

There is a choice of dining options. We dined in the cosy bar/bistro, which is a converted stable. The other is the AA rosette awarded Coachhouse restaurant. James, the friendly chef, lovingly prepared the food, from quality, locally sourced produce.

For starters we ordered Lakeland pork and garden herb terrine while Alan had twice baked Appleby cheese soufflé. Our mains were roast breast of chicken, served with rosti potato, creamy savoy cabbage and bacon, caramelised shallot and red wine jus – and roast rump of lamb served with fondant potato sauté leeks and peas and rosemary jus.

For desert, we had dark chocolate brownie with dark chocolate sauce, along with homemade vanilla ice cream – Alan enjoyed the vanilla crème brulee with delicious homemade biscuits.

Coffee and sweets to follow finished the meal off nicely in the relaxing atmosphere of the hotel conservatory.

After a very comfortable night’s sleep in the king size bed we were ready for breakfast.
We ordered eggs benedict with grilled bacon from the hotel’s extensive menu. There was also a good range of fruit juices, cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit and delicious fresh homemade bread. The Coachouse restaurant, where we had our breakfast was spacious, airy and tastefully decorated.

Just a few miles from Ravenstone Lodge, is the Lake District town of Keswick, a beautiful market town that has grown with the help of tourism and a strong local community. Here you will find a great variety of shops, cafes pubs and restaurants.

Keswick and the surrounding areas is also a centre of excellence for outdoor activities including hillwalking, mountain biking, paragliding, sailing and climbing. Whatever the weather you will always find something to do in Keswick.
Keswick Mining Museum, the Pencil Museum and local art galleries are all worth visiting.

The Keswick Launch Company (just ten minutes walk from the town centre) runs the Dermont Water Lake Cruises, stopping at various locations around the lake. You can also hire rowing boats and self drive motorboats. A short distance from the town you will find Castlerigg stone circle, thought to be around 5,000 years old. Castlerigg is perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

The Lake District is an area of outstanding beauty and is a great place to visit at any time of year, with a huge range of things to do and places to see. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town, The Ravenstone Lodge Hotel is the perfect location.
