Limerick – Ireland’s National City of Culture 2014

May 2014

Standing on the banks of the majestic River Shannon in the southwest of Ireland, Limerick is one of Ireland’s hidden gems, a charmingly compact city just 15 minutes from Shannon Airport, and the perfect spot from which to begin an exploration of Ireland’s newest coastal route, the Wild Atlantic Way. The city itself is the perfect place to spend a few days, especially this year as it celebrates its appointment as Ireland’s first ever National City of Culture.

Take a stroll along the handsome boardwalks that line the riverbank, peruse the beautiful array of art and antiquities in the Hunt Museum, learn about Limerick’s fascinating history in King John’s Castle, sample local artisan produce at the bustling Milk Market, catch a thrilling rugby match in the iconic Thomond Park and venture 30 minutes outside the city to discover the birthplace of the Irish coffee – the Flying Boat Museum in Foynes.

If you still have energy after all that, catch one of the many wonderful events happening across the city as part of the City of Culture. Here, we have cherry-picked the events you won’t want to miss from May to September.

May

Still Current (27 May):

Dancers of international renown, a choreographer who trained at the Royal Ballet, and a lighting designer worth his weight in awards: this is dancing as art. Music wise, expect new scores and Eric Satie works while the dancing will consist of new works from the prolific film-score composer, Armand Amar.

Culture and Chips (29 May – 2 June):
A celebration of the humble chip in a 1920s Spiegletent is the type of festival that doesn’t come along too often. Expect music from Jerry Fish and the Electric Slideshow, and a Culinary Carnival and Banquet where locally sourced grub is matched with craft beers and wines. Yum.

June

Bianco (14-22 June):

Forget all you know about the circus: NoFit State Circus has changed everything. Presented under the vaulted folds of a big top tent, the BIANCO show is an explosion of circus skills. Think swinging trapeze, cloudswing, aerial straps and all sorts of eye-watering acrobatics.

A Bill Whelan Gala Celebration (21 June):
Question: What do you get when you cross a Riverdance composer, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Limerick’s University Concert Hall? Answer: a night of musical memories that will last you a lifetime.

July

Sense and Sensibility (20 July):
Thanks to the timeless genius of Jane Austen and the folks at Chapter House Theatre company, you have the chance to witness something unique: a performance of Sense and Sensibility in the 800-year-old King Johne’s Castle.

September

The Elemental Arts and Culture Festival (12-14 September):
If you’re missing the imagination you had as a child, here’s where to find it again. Elemental’s otherworldly creations are delightfully dream-like and will be coming to you throughout Limerick city via the mediums of visual art, dance, theatre, literature and more.

Culture Night (19 September):
Museums, galleries, historic houses and many more cultural curiosities open their doors after hours and into the night for one night only. Expect free entry, a surprise or two and an entirely different way of seeing a city.

Limerick Jazz Festival (25-28 September):
Limerick, they say, is a lady. And she likes music. Limerick Jazz Festival is a smoothly seductive musical moment during the year of culture that pops up in venues all over the city thanks to the Limerick Jazz Society.
