The delights of the Welsh countryside are never far from your front door. You don’t have to muck out at these farms, but you’re welcome to muck in with feeding, petting and other activities.

Bottle-feed lambs and calves or head off on a tractor, trailer or pony ride at this beautiful beach farm offering wonderful views of Caernarfon Castle, the Menai Strait and Snowdonia. The on-site chocolatiers catch our eye, and the café and tea rooms offer a more balanced range of refreshments.

Folly Farm originally opened to the public as a hands-on dairy farm in 1988, and 25 years later it attracts stacks of awards and 400,000 annual visitors. A Piggery and a Ferret Farm are a couple of highlights to look out for, not to mention the adventure play area and Vintage Funfair.

On an off-shore site overlooking a nature reserve, this clifftop wonder welcomes a cast of dolphins, grey seals, pups, porpoises, seabirds and numerous other maritime visitors. Say hello to the hill-dwelling Priarie Dogs, Tex and Mex, Llinos the llama and Bruce the Wallaby from Australia, joined by Vietnamese pigs.

A 250-year-old farmhouse recreated as a community farm 25 years ago, this ancient site is the home of cattle, pigs, sheep, feral cats, bees and goats. There are 120 acres to poke through and fall in love with here, including a great café which serves food grown on the farm.

The spectacular Cardigan Bay in the heart of Snowdonia is the setting for a Farm Park where you can easily keep the kids enthralled for a day. Pigs, calves and pigmy goats are a few of the locals, and there’s an indoor sandpit, crazy golf and plenty of café and picnic areas.

Designed with children in mind, there are thousands of feet of heated and undercover play areas for children at this menagerie between Newport and Cardiff. Pony rides, picnic areas and plenty of opportunities to get close to some amazing animals feature, as well as a special play area for under-fours.

There are dozens of activities to enjoy at this award-winning centre. For starters, take your pick from bottle feeding pigs, rampaging through a play zone, handling hamsters, pony rides, pet racing, adventures through swamps and a badger-themed quest. There are indoor and outdoor areas, as well as tractor rides.

Whatever animals you or your kids love, you’ll be able to give them some TLC and feed them here. Birds, owls, pigs and dogs feature highly, and young ones feeling brave can grab a saddle and go on horseback. Llamas and a cheeky Halloween spookfest also appeal.

A husband and wife team originally created Gypsy Wood to care for Simba, a small horse born with deformed legs. Almost a decade on, he’s at the centre of a gaggle of happy donkey, goats, pot-bellied pigs and other friends, including the smallest breed of sheep in the world.
